As we settle in to October and the nights draw in ever quicker as each day passes it can be pretty damn difficult to motivate ourselves to get out for that run or bike ride we promised ourselves we'd do. Not only can the lack of light be disenchanting and depressing, but heading out into the darkness can be rather foreboding. There's always the gym of course with a good choice of apparatus to help with a well rounded workout, but for some it lacks the same draw compared to getting out into the fresh air. Not to mention a half decent gym can prove fairly costly and you always get that overriding sense of guilt when you don't go, though it can be a good motivator knowing your not getting your moneys worth. Having trained for the Bupa Great North Run in the light I feel a bit spoiled, but now I've caught the running bug my body's pining to get out on to the roads and trails once more to get its fix!
If your heading out on foot or on your bike at night, safety is paramount. I've heard quite a few recommendations regarding keeping your music at home, not only can it distract you when crossing a road, but it also allows you to be aware of your surroundings, just in case there happens to be some shady characters knocking about. Reflectivity is also an important addition to your gear, being seen at night is a good thing!
So, here's four pieces of gear that might come in quite handy for those night time escapades!
Montane Men's Featherlite Smock
An incredibly lightweight and fantastically versatile top. Wear it on your bike, out on your run, playing tennis or up on the hill. Made with Pertex Microlight, the Featherlite has high levels of wind protection, water resistance and as the name gives it away, its flippin' lightweight. The drop tail cut gives plenty of coverage for your behind and the elasticated cuffs and hem keep the windchill out. And going back to safety being paramount there's a Montane logo with 360 degree reflective trim.
Silva Simi Safety Light
The Simi is ideal for all the avid bikers out there. It comes with the motto "See and be seen", is splashproof, only weighs 10g and has a battery life of 110 hours. It comes in 4 bright colours and you can go for both the front white light and back red light.
Ronhill Men's Tracksters Origin
Classic running trousers from Ronhill made with durable, hardwearing and lightweight fabrics. They've got a water repellent coating, so no worries if you encounter a light shower or two. You've also got a back zip security pocket, foot stirrups and of course reflective piping on the calf.
Montane Powerdry Glove
Not forgetting to keep your hands toasty, this glove uses Polartec Powerdry fabrics, ideal for aerobic activities as they have high levels of wicking, transfering sweat away from the skin, keeping you dry. The Powerdry glove has pre-curved box construction fingers for a fantastic fit and grip dots on the thumb, middle and index fingers. And again, reflective trim adds extra levels of safety.
