Something For The Weekend #4

Photobucket

Are you desperately searching for something to do this weekend? Do you need something to fill the void that football has left on a Saturday? Then why not have a little read of whats coming up, we can't guarantee it'll all to be your liking, but hopefully it'll get your brains swirling with ideas with what you can do with those two glorious days off.

First up is the 'Making Of The Modern World' exhibition at the Science Museum in London, this one's a great one for the younger generations, although I dare say theres enough there to keep all ages and minds entertained and informed. It's a permanent exhibition and theres no extra cost to get in, always a bonus!

'Making Of The Modern World' takes you on a journey through the ages, telling the story of how we've got where we are now through various inventions and objects. You can go and have a gander at Stephenson's original Rocket Locomotive and Crick and Watson's DNA model. The entire gallery has been set out in chronological order, so effectively you can travel through time starting all the way back in 1750. As well as being able to engage with different artefacts, each age has a correlating historical study, giving both a cultural and historical insight into the displays.

Not into that? Try this...

The Williamson Tunnels, Liverpool. Now having been a student in Liverpool for three years I confess I never actually ventured down into the tunnels depths, I'd heard of them, just not actually seen them in the flesh. The tunnels were the brainchild of eccentric businessman Joseph Williamson. To cut a long story short (but it's worth reading the full story here) Williamson employed men to build and redesign houses in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool. This process went a little further as they began to dig vast network of tunnels underneath the ground.

The magic of the Williamson Tunnels is that no-one can conclusively say why Williamson wanted the tunnels built. Some subcribe to the idea that he was part of an extremist religious cult who feared the end of the world and so built the tunnels as a last safe haven. There are some that believe he simply employed people to dig the tunnels to help them out of poverty and unemployment, no-one really knows!

It's well worth a visit down there, you can see the vastness of his designs and witness the methodical details of his famous brick and sandstone arches that hold the tunnels up. Plus theres a cafe bar underneath, so you can take it all in while sipping a relaxing cup of tea.

This weeks product of the week, The North Face Nuptse 2 Vest. Their fresh in as of yesterday and if you fancy venturing down the Williamson Tunnel's it'll keep you warm and damp free with it's DWR coating!
