Review: Gregory Savant 38 Daypack

We had Mike from Gregory in yesterday for a bit of pack training, it's a new brand for us so an insight into the company and there products is never to be missed out on! We had a good look at their active range, rucksacks and daypacks ideal for more high octane pursuits, cycling especially. But the pack we focused mostly on was the Savant 38 Daypack, so that's the one we're going to shine a light on today!

With 38 litres at it's disposal the Savant is an excellent all round choice for hiking, trekking & hut to hut walks. It has a 3mm gauge wire used for the wishbone internal frame suspension and on the hipbelt and waistbelt you'll find EVA foam, which gives a snug and comfortable fit into the body, there's just enough padding to give you all the protection you'd need, without being overly bulky.

The Savant features a water resistant roll top style top pocket, which gives you a safe place to store a few gadgets or accessories that you really don't want to get wet. According to Mike the pack was tested with a toilet roll inside it for a trek on a horrifically wet day and at the end when they opened the top pocket it was still as dry as the Atacama desert, so no worries there then! Another rather handy feature on the pack is the side stash, zippered pockets on both sides, allowing you easy access to jam things in and out like water bottles or sweets while on the move.

The Savant is hydration compatible and has it's own hydration tube access point and staying on the watery subject it also has a raincover packed at the bottom just incase the heavens open. There's also side and bottom compression to ensure you can fit in plenty of gear and pack it in snug and securely. If you fancy venturing out to more icier climbs the Savant has ice axe attachment points and of course walking pole attachment points.

The whole ethos of Gregory revolves around fit, it's not just about putting the pack on, it's about 'wearing' the pack and making it part of your self for a comfortable trek. Certainly with their larger packs it's recommended to get the focus on your hipbelt. The best way to do this is to put the pack on, loosen all the straps and then tighten the shoulder straps and tension straps until it's snug against your shoulders. This action raises the pack to the correct level, allowing you to clip on the waistbelt at the correct height just over the ridge of your hip bone. Having tried it on myself, I can attest it's a bloomin' comfortable fit! How ever to be honest, pack fitting can be very subjective and plenty of people have their own tried and tested ways of doing!

We currently have the Gregory Savant 38 in two colours; Indigo Blue and Thundercloud Black. It costs £89.49 and weighs in at 1.400kg.
