Last night saw the winds pick up to a pretty noisy level, must have been rather blustery and wet for the brave trick or treaters venturing out! Having a little read of November's TGO magazine this morning, the section on key features for Windproof Tops seemed rather apt!
Fabrics
Good wind protective fabrics are usually tightly woven synthetic fabrics. These are hardwearing and breathable as well as giving that much needed protection against the blustery conditions. Thicker fabrics give more protection in severe weathers and high abrasion resistance but can weigh more obviously. Most, if not all will carry a durable water repellent coating too.
Hoods
A hood can greatly add to the warmth and versatility of a windproof top. On its own it can keep your head and neck warm in milder weather and in the cold it can be worn over a hat for extra protection. A decent hood should fit snugly and not blow off in stronger gales.
Style
Over the head style smocks are usually lighter in weight compared to jackets made of the same fabric. Jackets can be easier to get on and off and are usually longer than smocks, although some smocks will have a decent drop tail for extra coverage.
Pockets
Pockets can be useful for items like compasses, gloves, snacks and other accessories. Larger pockets can hold maps. The best pockets are accessible even when wearing a pack or harness and many pockets double up ass a stuff sack for the garment itself, making storage easy.
Cuffs
Simple elasticated cuffs are the norm on the majority of garments, giving a decent amount of adjustability. These types can be lighter weight but have less ventilation. Whatever the style it's always good to have cuffs that can be pushed up your arms for warmer weathers.
Length
Windproof garments are usually fairly short, but have drop tail hems a lot of the time. Some can be tucked into trousers. Ideally they should cover layers worn under them but not be so long that they stick out below your waterproof jacket.
Weight
Ultralight garments are fantastic in the summer and for backpacking but don't always provide as much protection as you need in the winter months, so a waterproof shell may be a good idea as well. The thickest of windproof garments can cope with blizzards and snowy spells on their own.
We've currently got a wide selection of Men's and Women's Windproof Jackets from all your favourite brands, including; Montane, The North Face, Buffalo and Haglofs.
