The North Face Zenith Triclimate Jacket is another new addition to the North Face's Autumn/Winter 2008 Triclimate range. A slightly upgraded version of the Amplitude, it features a slightly longer cut; 81cm from center-back as opposed to 76cm on the Amplitude, making it quite a long jacket.
The HyVent outer shell is designed to be slightly harder-wearing than the Amplitude, although the quilted Heatseeker inner jacket is exactly the same. These changes to the outer jacket weigh in at a hefty 500g difference in weight though, so there's a real trade-off between the more durable and longer Zenith and the lighter but shorter Amplitude or Evolution triclimates.
There's an extra £10 on the Zenith, so not too much difference in the price. The Zenith is going to be ideal for cold weather trekking and scrambling in harsh environments where you need the durability of the stronger fabric. Bear in mind though, that HyVent is made waterproof by a DWR treatment that can rub off after prolonged use, so if you want something really durable you'd be better looking at a Gore-Tex triclimate such as the All Terrain or Primavera.
