A couple of months ago The Outdoors Industry Association (OIA) announced the launch of a new initiative, Britain on Foot. The campaign is a call to action to get the great British public out and about, embracing a healthier, fitter and happier lifestyle. The campaign will endeavor to cover every activity across the spectrum, whether it's a walk around your local park or a spot of bouldering up in the Peak District. The initiative isn't just pigeon holing itself with walking, it will try to push other outdoor pursuits such as trail running, mountain biking, climbing, anything to get people off the sofa and out enjoying everything the outdoors has to offer.
The campaign already has the backing of the government, with minister for tourism John Penrose and MP's John Mann and David Rutley attending the launch. Andrew Denton, the OIA's chief executive has been lobbying Westminster over the past couple of months, to discuss the potential of the Britain on Foot campaign and the idea of other national projects that promote themes of adventure and the outdoors. “This is a pivotal time for the UK outdoor industries,” Denton said. “We
have made it onto the national political stage, we have gathered
representatives from all parts of the sector under one banner, and now
we have a campaign that everyone can wholeheartedly support. If we all
want this to be a success, we can make it happen.” The official Britain on Foot website will be launched around February 2013. The sites focus will be to provide links, articles, uploads and information all situated around getting people outdoors.
