Now I know it's nowhere near winter yet, but we still get regular calls about The North Face Amplitude Triclimate, so I thought I'd write a little about it to address some common questions.
Having the pick of Outdoorkit, this (among a few!) is my personal choice of jacket. With a waterproof and breathable Hyvent outer jacket and a removable, zip-in fleece jacket, it can easily be configured for most winter weather.
The jacket is made from a tough-wearing Hyvent fabric that is both waterproof and breathable. It's not too tough to be uncomfortable but is thick enough that it's not going to rip or wear. Granted the jacket isn't going to pack down too small, but for cold or wet weather that's not a big problem. The jacket has a good sized hood that is removable and adjustable. The collar has a nice lining so it's not unpleasantly cold to put the hood up and pull the jacket round your neck.
The zip-in fleece inner jacket is warm and comfortable and has a soft and comfortable nylon outer. It's quite a good looking jacket in itself and I quite often wear it on its own! My only quibble with the inner jacket is that the inner lining is a little like velcro. It's soft and comfortable but will catch on everything - I have some rough skin on my hands and it's really unpleasant to put my hands in the pockets as my skin continually catches on the material!
However, I wouldn't let this put you off as this is a fantastic performing jacket and also represents value for money even though it's not too cheap.... As you'd expect from The North Face, it's got loads of drawstrings and whatnot, pit zips for those of you with hot arm pits and should suit both the casual and technical user.
It's due into us at the start of August, so you can find it here then, in both Men's and Women's versions:
