Every season you get new technologies hitting the shelves left right and centre, but for Autumn/Winter 2013 there's on particular advance to get excited about. Hydrophobic Down. If you want superior warmth then Down jackets have always been the go to garments for winter, but in damp conditions Down is less favorable. If the Down gets wet, it clumps up, stops lofting and loses it's insulative qualities pretty damn quickly. Hydrophobic Down or Hydrodown is a new form of Down which has a water repellent treatment applied to it, ensuring it absorbs less water, driers faster and retains loft even in damp conditions. Hydrophobic Down is by no means fully waterproof, but in damp UK conditions, water resistant Down is a rather big step indeed!
All of
Rab's Down range for this season now use Hydrophobic Down and Berghaus have also released their new
Scafell Down range, which also utilises the technology.
We know there can be a lot of trepidation when buying your first Down garment. How do you wash it? What do you wash it with? To allay any fears, we know have a
'Down After Care' section on our website!
