Sneak Preview #4: The North Face Cipher Hybrid Hoodie

It's Sneak Preview time again! In our last foray into the world of TNF sneak previews we brought you the Men's Infiesto & Havoc Full Zips, that was Monday and we don't do resting on our laurels here at Outdoorkit, so without further ado, here's another sumptuous glimpse at what we've got coming in this Spring/Summer!

Introducing The North Face Cipher Hybrid Hoodie. It's officially new for the SS12 Season, although it's carrying on from where the Cipher Hybrid Jacket from last Summer left off. There's been a bit of a name change and a few updated specifications to bring it into the new season, giving it a new look and improved performance.

The Cipher Hoodie has been made with an innovative Gore Windstopper Softshell fabric, giving a wind permeability rating of 0 CFM, so you've got windproof assurance when you fancy venturing out on those blustery days. The hoodie has also been constructed with TNF Apex Aerobic stretch side panels, providing the jacket with ample 4-way stretch flexibility, always a bonus when participating in faster paced pursuits. The side panels have a wind permeability rating of 10 CFM, so although not completely windproof, it'll still have very good protection against less than favourable conditions.

The hoodie's alpine fit gives it a sleek look, ready for any activity and it's large alpine pockets provide an easy place to store your essentials, such as maps and other documents and accessories. The attached hood gives good all round protection from the elements and it's adjustable elastic bound edged hood allows for the best possible fit. Again, for a customizable fit the Cipher has non-abrasive molded cuff tabs.

The hoodie's main weapon in it's armory is it's ability to keep the wind at bay, but with an added Durable Water Repellent coating, light showers and snow drift won't be a problem either!

The North Face Cipher Hybrid Hoodie weighs in at a lightweight 640g and will retail at around £160. It comes in four different colours; Athens Blue, TNF Black, Asphalt Grey and Sublime Green.

Marathon Training Secrets

You may remember at the beginning of last month our write up of the GoMakeItHappen charity event held at the Harpenden Halls. The night itself was all about kick starting the charity creating a platform to progress from. Now we've danced into the new year, we're now brainstorming other ideas to keep the charities momentum going.

One idea that caught all of our attention was to give the Great North Run a go this September. Out of the group that organised the charity event, none of us have ever run more than 5km at a time, so not only would it be for a great cause, it'd be a heck of a challenge as well! Realistically if we were to go ahead with it, training would need to start asap, especially when you think about all those extra Christmas pounds we'd need to work off! We'd have to get our names in the ballot fairly sharpish too.

With that in mind, we thought we'd need all the help we could get! So courtesy of Octobers issue of Outdoors Fitness Magazine, here's some marathon tips from Olympic Silver medalist Steve Cram!

Variety - "The big mistake people make is always to run at the same pace. Elite athletes inject real variety into their training. Mix long runs with slow recovery sessions, and put in quicker runs, interval sessions and hill work to develop overall fitness."

Cross-Training - "I've got war wounds from my years as a runner, so I use my mountain bike to avoid niggles that might turn into injuries. It doesn't stress my body but still provides me with a good cardio workout."

Nutrition - "People get too wound up about nutrition. Simply think of it like putting petrol into a car. You wouldn't put the wrong fuel in, nor go for a drive with the tank empty, so why do that when you want your body to perform?"

Planning - "In a good marathon, your first half should be very comfortable and your second half allow you to pick up the pace. Elite runners aim for negative splits, where you get faster during the race. A lot of people don't understand why they crashed in the second half of a marathon. They almost always went off too fast and didn't save enough for the second half."

Run Everywhere - "I travel a lot, and always pack running shoes, it's a great way to see a city. Running is a great stress reliever and even 20 minutes keeps that consistency in my training. It makes a massive difference for me."

Sneak Preview #3: The North Face Infiesto Full Zip and Havoc Full Zip

It's a new week so very aptly we thought we'd bring you a brand new North Face Spring/Summer 2012 Sneak Preview! So far we've showcased two new pairs of hiking boots and a wind resistant Jacket and for today's sneaky peak we're moving on to Outdoor Tekwear.

The fiery named North Face Men's Infiesto Full Zip is a completely new fleece for 2012. Its been made with Polartec Power Dry to help keep skin dry when you perspire, making it an ideal piece for runners and adventure travelers. For optimum flexibility the Infiesto has elastic binding at the collar, cuff and hem so whether your out on your bike or off for a gentle jog you won't be constricted in your movements.

Two zippered hand pockets provide a handy place to store your smaller essentials and accessories, so there's no need to be without your mobile phone, wallet or even MP3 player. The Infiesto is available in three colours, an eye catching Monarch Orange/Asphalt Grey, a soothing Athens Blue/Asphalt Grey and the classic Asphalt Grey/Black. It's expected to cost around £75.

Second on the agenda this afternoon is The North Face Men's Havoc Full Zip. It's been made with a unique stretch fabric with geometric jacquard pattern for improved airflow. So again like the Infiesto, it's ideal for those wanting to wear while engaging in faster paced pursuits. It rather optimistically has UV protection (although it is surprisingly mild at the moment!) so when the sun does decide to pop it's head out, you won't be exposed to dangerous UV rays.

The Havoc's angled apex chest pocket gives you an easy place to store thinner documents like a map or two, while it's lower zip pockets provide an ideal place for storing mobile phones et al. The top has been made with a flatlock seam construction for reduced abrasion and extra comfort.

The Havoc Full Zip is available in Athens Blue, Asphalt Grey and TNF Black and is expected to cost around £70.

Sneak Preview #2: The North Face Men's Diablo Wind Jacket

It may be 5pm on a Friday and the weekend is well and truly on everyone's mind, but there's still just enough time to get a second cheeky sneak preview in before everyone clocks off!

We had a good old gander at two boots from The North Face in our last preview, now it's the turn of one of their new windwear pieces, with the aptly named Diablo Wind Jacket.

It's certainly a snazzy looking piece, coming in four different colours; Athens Blue, Triumph Green, Asphalt Grey and TNF Black. The attached stowable hood provides good coverage from less than savoury conditions, rather handy if this wind keeps up! The jackets back cape vent also ensures you keep well ventilated, because lets face it, no-one enjoys being all hot and sweaty while their out and about.

The Diablo features two alpine pockets, giving plenty of room to keep all your smaller accessories, including larger items like maps and other documents. Inside there's also two media storage pockets, so you'll never be without your favourite tunes. (or soothers if we're talking about the cough sweet..ahem). Velcro adjustable cuffs give you a secure fit around your hands while a ribbed hem helps maintain the jackets shape and helps keep the cold out.

SS12 Sneak Preview 1#: The North Face Verto S4K GTX and Verbera Backpacker Boots

As promised here's the very first of our Spring/Summer 2012 Sneak Previews! Over the coming weeks and months we'll be bringing you the low down on all the new gear expected in from all your favourite brands, including The North Face, Haglofs, Berghaus, Merrell and many more!

Let's kick things off with a boot or two, because let's face it, who can resist a good boot?

First up we've got The North Face Verto S4K GTX Boot. Brand new for SS12, it's been dubbed the new generation of mountaineering boot for mixed terrain. Made with synthetic leather over the forefoot, the Verto has ample protection and durability. A rugged Panatex ballistic textile throughout helps keep the weight of the boot down whilst maintaining excellent breathability and keeps protection at an optimum level.

The boot uses a Smartlite PU mudguard which provides improved abrasion resistance over traditional rubber mudguards. The Gore-Tex membrane gives ever reliable waterproofing and breathability, so if you fancy venturing out to soggy and wet terrain, they'll be no worries!

There's a nice lot of technicality rammed into the Bottom of the Verto S4K too. TPU cradle heel technology gives ample stability and a vertical anti-compression post helps prevent crampons from slipping. Obviously if your planning on hitting a variety of different terrains, the least you'd expect is a boot with second to none comfort and the Verto provides just that. An EVA heel pad provides great cushioning, whilst the EVA footbed and forefoot cushioning pads ensures plenty of shock absorbency when hitting tougher terrains.

We've got the Verto S4K GTX coming in the colour TNF Black/TNF Red (as shown above) and their expected to cost around £230.

Next in line is The North Face Verbera Backpacker GTX Boot. Aesthetically it's more traditional than the Verto, but it still ticks all the right boxes. Made with a full grain Italian leather upper, the Verbera Backpacker has been equipped with much needed durability. The Smartlite PU mudguard provides the boot with excellent abrasion resistance, always useful when out in more rocky terrains.

The tried and tested Gore-Tex membrane ensures waterproofing and breathability, whilst the stainless steel upper eyelets and lock instep eyelet provides a secure fit. Comfort wise the Verbera comes out on top too, with a Northotic Pro Premium EVA footbed and Ortholite forefoot cushioning pads.

Working our way down, the bottom of the boot has TPU cradle heel stability technology and EVA heel cushioning, so if you find yourself out in rougher terrains the Verbera Backpacker will be able to cope without a hitch. To complete the boot it's been fitted with an always dependable Vibram sole.

The Verbera Backpacker GTX Boot will be arriving into us in the colour TNF Black/TNF Red and is expected to cost around £180.

Happy 2012 people! Hope everyone had an enjoyable New Years? Mine was spent on the east coast in Cromer and consisted of a slap up meal, a few healthy pints of local ale down the pub then a bit of Jools Holland to ring in the new year. I can't remember a New Years Eve without Jools Holland actually!

Anyway, now we've got Christmas done and dusted and rolled into 2012 it's time to start thinking ahead! Over the coming weeks and months we'll be bringing out 2012 Spring/Summer range previews from all your favourite brands, so you'll be one step ahead when those shiny new products eventually come into stock!

Go Make It Happen Charity Event

You may have heard us mention a new charity set up in the last few months in memory of Sam Harding who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident. The charity was set up with the aim of supporting young people between the age of 18 and 30 and to help give them a leg up to achieve the things they wouldn't otherwise be able to achieve without the help of the GoMakeItHappen charity.

The first big fundraiser was held last night down at the Harpenden Halls and it couldn't have gone better! There was sumptuous food thanks to Spice of Caddington, side splitting comedy and of course a special guest appearance from Chelsea legend Ron 'Chopper' Harris. Everyone was very much in the giving mood and dipped into their pockets to make sure that over £2,000 was raised on the night alone!

There was also a charity auction which went down a storm, where people could walk away with some fantastic footballing memorabillia, including a signed Wayne Rooney shirt, signed & framed Ron 'Chopper' Harries photo (pictured tackling George Best may I add!) and other sporting paraphernalia. Plus there were other smaller goodies on offer like signed Iron Maiden cd's, an Adnam's Brewery tour and obviously plenty of the alcoholic stuff! We also donated a couple of North Face Daypacks!

A great night was had by all, and for the first major event for the GoMakItHappen charity, its certainly was a roaring success.

Something For The Weekend #21

Has Winter finally graced itself with it's presence? We've been holding fire and waiting for it to hit home over the last few weeks, but that temperature hasn't been willing to drop itself below 12°C before this week it seems, even the evenings have been fairly mild! I did however venture out to the football last night and it's the first time I've felt that wintry bite etching it's way on to my skin. I didn't freeze though, which is partly down to my decision to finally invest in a decent pair of 3 season socks. I find with warm feet, the rest of the body tends to follow suit! Although wearing JUST a pair of socks isn't to be advised...

1. Greystoke Cycle Cafe, Cumbria. After a muddy day out on the trails, staff at Greystoke Cycle Cafe will welcome you with towels and blankets when it's miserable, free water bottle fill ups, use of pumps and chunky, sticky flapjacks to eat. There's even a cycle barn for sleep overs. Open Easter weekend til late September.

Adventures in the Yorkshire Dales!

John, our Business Development Manager and his partner Sammy, jetted off to the Yorkshire Dales last week to celebrate their 2nd anniversary. Here's how their weekend panned out!

Neither myself or Sammy had spent much time in the Dales so we thought this would be a perfect place to explore whilst celebrating our second anniversary. We were staying at the Old Joinery B&B, just outside the village of Sedbergh in the Western Dales. Janet & Robin's hospitality was absolutely fantastic and they made us feel very welcome and special from the moment we arrived, highly recommended accomodation! Sedburgh itself is a lovely quiet village with a couple of pubs and the buildings are mostly stone so very picturesque! The first day we spent driving around the local area and exploring.

We visited the Wensleydale Creamery where they make the most fantastic cheeses I've ever sampled. There are also plenty of links to Wallace & Gromit! "Cracking cheese"... and it's all free to try! Needless to say I sampled literally every cheese in there (some of them more than once..) and this is a MUST see for anyone who likes a bit of the good stuff on their crackers! After that we drove down into the village of Dent, where we walked through the cobbled streets and looked up at the giant hills that surround the place. As this day was our actual anniversary, we headed back to base and got ourselves ready for our celebratory evening out at the Barbon I nn near Kirkby Lonsdale. I had the trio of game from the specials board which was phenomenal, and Sammy had the local sausages and mash which was also very tasty!

The next morning we were treated to Janet's wonderful full English breakfast before we set out on our major hike for the weekend. We drove about 20 miles south, to a quaint little place called Malham which is lodged neatly in a valley surrounded by rolling hills. We had researched a walk from the Walking Englishman website before we left and it turned out to be a cracker! We headed out of the village next to the little beck that runs through it, and turned left when we reached the Gordale Beck river. We came across a beautiful waterfall named Janet's Foss where we stopped to take advantage of the photo opportunities it presented, before heading off up the track and across a lane where we caught our first glimpse of Gordale Scar.

It is a stark contrast to Janet's Foss just a few hundred yards further back, and is quite menacing when you walk the path into the heart of it. We then came across the lower of the Gordale waterfalls, which is nice to look at but completely blocks your path. I have to admit, "Walking Englishman" undercooked the danger levels quite substantially on this part of the walk, we scrambled up the dryest rockface we could find but one slip and my chips would have been well and truly cooked. To give Sammy all the credit she deserves, she absolutely smashed it... my excuse is the 45 litre pack I was wearing was probably not helping my balance up the sheer rock and there was a moment where I genuinely considered giving up and climbing back down. I made it to the top however, and my feelings of elation made the upper Gordale waterfall look even more spectacular gushing out of a hole in the huge rock wall.

From here we pressed onwards and upwards out of Gordale Scar and across a couple of miles of hills and farmers fields towards the lake of Malham Tarn. Upon reaching the Tarn we stopped for lunch and took in the sight of the very wild-looking water surrounded by highland cattle, before setting off past "Water Sinks", which is aptly named as the river literally just dives underground for a few miles, and headed into Malham Cove. After what seemed like a thousand steps down into the valley, we then climbed up onto a huge natural limestone terrace which looked out over Malham. We were glad to be within sight of the village as it got very dark very fast from that point onwards! After we completed our 7-mile walk we went home to change, before heading out to the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant in Sedburgh to stuff our faces and undo all the good work we had done during the day...

On our final day we headed out to Aysgarth falls for a few photos and a short walk by the river, before having lunch in Barnoldswick and heading back down South! Needless to say the entire weekend went far too quickly, and before I knew it I was back at work on Monday morning... oh well!

Peruvian Trek for MacMillan Cancer Support

We always like to get ourselves behind a good cause here at Outdoorkit and Bernie Webbe's is no exception. Bernie was diagnosed twice, first in 2007 and again in 2010 with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a very rare form of cancer that only effects 35 out of every 10 million people. But Bernie's not one to let it get on top of her and is planning a 10 day trek up to the Peruvian Mountains to raise awareness for the condition and to help raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support.

She has already undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and major facial surgery, which has resulted in permanent facial disfigurement.

The Cosmic really has had a devout following ever since it's appearance, although in saying that the quality of the boot really does sell itself.

Following on quite neatly from last weeks post we thought we'd have a closer look at The Chesnut Centre Conservation & Wildlife Park. Situated just North-East of Chapel-en-le-Frith, it's also only a stones throw away from Buxton, which provides a healthy base for the Peaks. Having been there myself I can attest that it's well worth a visit! We found it by accident actually whilst out for a drive around the surrounding area. The Park's main focus is on it's Otter and Owl inhabitants.

Theres a mini lake in the centre of the park where you can amble around and watch the playful Otter's in their natural habitat. There are points where you have to play 'spot the otter', but theres always one that gleefully pokes it head out of the water for a photo opportunity. Down from the lake you find yourself greeted by all sorts of Owls, Pine Martens and other furry friends.

The park itself was founded in 1984 by the Heap family, who also own and run the New Forest Wildlife Park in Marchwood, Hampshire. As well as being a fantastic family attraction, the Chesnut Centre does valuable work when it comes to care facilities and rehabilitation for injured or orphaned otters.

If Owls and Otters aren't your thing then maybe the Bakewell Craft & Gift Fair can interest you? It happens every weekend in the Bridgend Hall, which is situated just through the bath gardens in the centre of town. Theres always hundreds of unique stalls selling individual crafts and gifts, perfect for a few stocking fillers! Plus you can pay a visit to one of the towns many bakery's and sample the world famous Bakewell Tart!

It's open this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 10-30am till 4-30pm.

Something For The Weekend #19

I thought I'd go for a morning slot for this weeks Something For The Weekend, that fresh nip in the air keeps your mind sprightly to assess whats going on this weekend. First of all I ought to mention that we're currently now open weekdays from 9am - 8pm, giving you ample time to get all your orders and queries in. Get yourself in from work, settle down with a the poison of your choice and and choose some lovely insulation for the winter or some Christmas gifts for your loved ones. Simples!

For a walk this week we thought we'd take in a more urban surrounding, although a beautiful urban surrounding it is too! We're going to have a gander at the enchanting Derbyshire spa town of Buxton. It's said to have the highest elevation point of any market town in the country and is widely seen as the 'gateway to the Peak District'. The walk itself starts at The Crescent in the centre of town and see's you ending up around the Pavillon Gardens.

The 5th Duke of Devonshire built Buxton's famous Crescent as glorious accomodation for the town's spa visitors. One of the main features of the buildings are it's wide doorways, built to allow the fashinonable broad skirted dresses of the day to pass through. The Crescent houses shops, coffee rooms and assembly rooms.

Onwards and upwards along from The Crescent you'll find yourself coming up to the Natural Mineral Baths which were built on the site of the old Roman Baths, between 1851 and 1854. You can also quench your thirst by filling up your bottles with healthy Buxton Mineral Water at St.Annes Well, which was said to have healed the ill folk of Buxton in Medieval times.

Further on down your walk you'll hit the Opera House. The Theatre manages to put on around 450 shows a year and is also home to the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. The Opera House was opened in 1903 and in 1927 it was used as a Cinema.

At point 14 of the walk you'll find yourself coming into the market place, which predates the famous Crescent. It's officially the highest market place in England, so make sure you take your breathing apparatus with you!

As you saunter along you'll also get to take in St. Annes Church, Grin Low Woods, Broad Walk and then finishing up at the Pavillon Gardens, which were designed by Joseph Paxton's own student, Edward Milner.

The show brings together over 500 quality exhibitions, ranging from interiors & furnishings to food & drink. It certainly wouldn't be an Ideal Home Show without all your favourite celebs making an appearance too, theres going to be Laurence Llwelyn-Bowen, chef Gizzi Erskine and wine expert Olly Smith. It's all going on at Earls Court and tickets start from just £10, so if your still looking for ideas for your home this Christmas, or indeed any time, it's well worth a looky look!

The FA Cup and a belated Halloween

Ahh, you can't beat the magic of an FA Cup weekend can you? Although in saying that the real drama begins when the big gun's get thrown into the pot in the 3rd round. I heard somewhere that it might have been the first time that two Non-League teams from Bedfordshire made it into the first round proper with Arlesey going down 3-1 to Salisbury and the mighty Luton Town slaying Northampton Town 1-0, although many (me included) don't agree with some of the national reports putting this down as a 'giant killing', but the 2nd round beckons all the same!

Now this may be a few weeks late, but here's the Outdoorkit team on Halloween! I think the costume award has to go to John our Business Development Manager who was dressed rather fetchingly as Daisy the Cow for the day, much to the amusement of a few delivery drivers who popped into the office for a signature...

Something For The Weekend #18

Without stating the obvious, it's rather dark outside now isn't it? It's a bit of a so so to get used to, but once you've got used to driving home in the dark you get yourself into the routine eventually. Unfortunately there are people who find this time of the year tougher than others, being taken with 'Seasonal Affective Disorder' or rather glumly known as 'SAD'. There are ways to combat it though and I know a couple of people who use Bright Light Therapy, where your exposed to specific wavelengths or 'tones' of light which mimic natural sunlight. It's not a clinically proven cure or treatment, but it does seem to have some affect, which can only be a positive thing!

Right, now the elephant in the room has been acknowledged (and that's only because I turned my bright light box on), we can get on with the show!

We had a look at Glaramara in the lakes a few days ago, now it's the turn of Dale Head. Another Fell in the Lakes, Dale Head rises to 753 metres and is situated just north of Honister Pass. The route we're checking out today comes from the September/October edition of Lakeland Walker. It starts it's way from Rosthwaite by Tongue Gill and leads you up to the summit of Dale Head itself, where theres some lovely open views of the Newlands Valley and Skiddaw. Here's the route directions...

1. From the Car Park by the Church Hall, continue along the lane away from the main B5289 road, then turn right on track to River Derwent.

2. Cross the stepping stones and turn right, or you can head downstream around 300m and turn back left. Take path up to left of sidestream (Tongue Gill) to plateau.

3. Keep ahead (west) through wide col to meet cairned path and turn left to cross Newlands Beck to Dalehead Tarn.

4. The pitched path to the right of the tarn ascents North-West to shoulder, then less steeply South-West up spur to summit.

And there it is, the four steps of Dale Head!

Alternatively, you can take a more casual approach and bake a few cakes for the lakes! The 'Cakes for the Lakes' project has been organised by Friends of the Lake district. It's a fundraiser to help raise money to maintain the Lake Districts beautiful landscape. The initiative is being launched on 19th November by local food writer and Chef, Annette Gibbons OBE, at the Kendal United reformed church hall.

Pretty much anyone can get involved though and it's all about cooking delicious Cumbrian cake recipes and enjoying them with your friends and family.

Something For The Weekend #17

We've had a small hiatus from Something For The Weekend over the last week or so, which was mainly down to me heading off to Bruges for a short break. If your running out of ideas for city breaks then I urge you to take a look in it's direction. It's one of those cities you can just wander around aimlessly and discover a new little cafe or square round every corner. Some of the architecture is mind blowing, especially the city's renowned Belfy. There's also a plentiful array of museums, from Hans Miemling's 15th Century works to the Groeninge Museum's collection of art that spans through 6th centuries. Plus the local Belgian Beer is a must, once you go Leffe Bruin, you don't go back!

Anyway back to business, ever considered a walk around Glaramara in the Lakes? 'Glaramara' itself is a fell with a height of 783m at the central point of it's ridge. The fell stretches out a fair bit too, scaling a good 6km all the way from Stonethwaite in Borrowdale up to the mountain pass of Esk House.

The name 'Glaramara' has a bit of a Lord Of The Rings twang to it, but it derives from a series of old Norse words that literally translate as "The mountain with the shieling (mountain hut) by a ravine."

Glaramara also plays host to an annual fell race, starting from the Outdoor Centre around Seatoller and finishing up at the summit of Glaramara itself. It's around 8km and this years winning time was 45 minutes, very impressive!

If your not up to running 8km and let's face it most of us aren't, then there's plenty of other walking routes to take to really get the best out of Glaramara and it's surroundings. There's some brilliant views on this route starting at Seathwaite, or alternatively you could try this route starting at the already mentioned Stonethwaite.

Now we can't have a Someting For The Weekend post without mentioning some sort of food stuff or beverage and today is no different! With that being the case, why not have a look at 'The Wine Show' at London Olympia? It's dubbed as London's finest Wine experience, with the country's leading wine experts on hand to give advice and some of the world's best wine producer's present. There's even going to be a wine tasting session with TV expert and presenter, Oz Clarke!

If you feel like you need a bit of guidance on your wine journey then the Wine Show even offers a 'Wine Walk' headed by renowned critic Joe Wadsack, who will take you round each exhibition and talk you through his chosen wines.

The show itself starts on Friday and goes through to Sunday, so you've got plenty of time to get in and have a meander around this beverage heaven.

We reported a couple of months ago that Fivefingers had taken Hollywood by storm with the likes of Scarlet Johansson, Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Hudson being papped in them, now Vibram's Barefooters have the royal seal of approval with the news that non other than Prince Harry has purchased a pair while out in San Diego. Barefooting has well and truly entered the mainstream!

The whole concept of barefoot running is to make you feel more 'at one' with your surroundings (without sounding too pretentious there). Not only that but it reverts you back to a more natural running style, which is said to improve your gait and make impact and running injuries less of an occurance, so everyone's a winner!

Help For Heroes Christmas Stocking!

It's all about bringing a bit of joy to the men and women who have suffered from life changing injuries whilst on tour. The idea is to club together with a group of friends or work colleagues to get the much needed essentials for those that have been injured. This year the stockings will be going out to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Headly Court and Personal Recovery Centres.

Can you feel it coming in the air tonight?

Phil Collins and a man in a Gorilla suit aside, there seems to be a general consensus among the masses that the Autumn/Winter has finally arrived. Everything from that chilly feeling when you get into your car first thing to the realisation that it's not as light as it was seems to point to it! Today also feels like the first time in quite a while I've actually felt nippy in the office. In our last warehouse the office performed very much like a flask - when it was cold the building seemed to keep everything inside freezing and when it was hot, boy was it scorching inside, the tin roof didn't help... Certainly the summer months in our new office have been much more bearable, we've got a higher roof and a bigger room to start with, so theres a hell of a lot more air circulating around. Plus we've got windows that actually do seem to work when they're opened, as well as a front door to let the breeze (if any at all) float into our work space.

With that nippy chill in the air, I thought it the perfect time to showcase two Haglofs insulated pieces we received through the Outdoorkit doors last week.

New in for this season is the Haglofs Borea Down Parka. It's one of those jackets that you just feel warm looking at it and with a 90/10 Down Fill, it's certainly that. The Borea has been made with a box wall construction, eliminating those pesky cold spots and preventing down from shifting. Theres a Durable Water Repellent coating on the shell to help keep light showers and snow at bay and the elasticated adjustable hood gives good all round weather protection.

The Parka style cut brings the jacket down to around thigh length, so you've got plenty of warmth around your behind and upper legs. The jackets full length zipper has a wind baffle behind it, preventing blowy conditions from penetrating through. You also get plenty of pockets with the Borea Down Parka, theres 2 zippered hand warmer pockets, 2 zippered chest pockets and 2 inner mesh pockets. Although theres ample insulation packed in, it still retains it's flexibility with articulated sleeves with Polartec Powerstretch cuff closures.

Our second Haglofs piece to showcase is the Bivvy Down Jacket. It's an ultralight, minimalist jacket, made to help retain core body warmth. With a 90/10 Goose Down fill and a fill power of 650, like the Borea, it's a fantastic Winter warmer. Even though it's been equipped with a copious amount of insulation, it still only weighs in at 440g and is extremely packable. Again it has been DWR treated to repel the rain and snow plus the wind baffle behind the main zip ensures very good protection when the wind picks up.

Pockets wise, you've got 2 zippered handwarmer pockets (one of which the jacket can rather cleverly fold into) and 1 zippered chest pocket. So theres more than enough room to keep all those essentials close to hand. The Bivvy's articulated sleeves provides the garment with maximum dexterity, so your movement will most definitely not be restricted, especially useful when participating in faster paced activities.

Review: The Merrell Women's Yarra Boots

Let's start the week off with a Winter treat shall we? With limited numbers in the UK, we're one of the very few Independant retailers to have it in stock, introducing the Merrell Women's Yarra Boot.

Stargazing for Beginners at Ennerdale

We've all been out on the hills during the day and looked up at the vast expanse of sky above us, but have you ever wondered what it looks like at night? Away from the hustle and bustle of urban lights? Well now you can!

Organised by the Friends of the Lake District, "Stargazing for Beginners" is coming to Ennerdale on Monday 17th October. Hosted by Stuart Atkinson from Kendal's Eddington Astronomical Society, the talk is all about what can be seen at night, when it can be seen and how you can see the stars. Stuart will also delve into how light pollution is affecting our ability to see stars that otherwise we should be able to see.

Obviously as our population grows, the need for housing increases which means the expantion of already existing settlements and the creation of new ones, which all adds to the problem of light pollution. In a campaign directed by Protect Rural England (CPRE) it was found that people living with light pollution has increased from 54% in 2007 to 59% in 2011. I think a lot of people accept that it doesn't always neccasarily affect our day to day mindset or routine, but when you actually go out into the country, look up and find yourself able to see everything up there, part of you does wish that the problem of light pollution wasn't so widespread.

Classics for this Autumn/Winter

Seeing as the Autumn chill is now very much upon us, I thought we'd look at two absolute classics this morning. They've been keeping us warm for many a year, the Rab Neutrino Endurance Jacket and the Mountain Equipme nt Classic Lightline Jacket. Their both really the standout pieces for their respective brands and are sure to keep you warm and toasty whatever the UK weather has to throw at you, as well as nippier conditions abroad.

Let's kick off with the Rab Neutrino. With 220g of White Goose Down with a 750 fill power theres every chance you won't be able to tell it's winter outside at all. The outer of the garment uses Pertex Endurance, an incredibly lightweight fabric that keeps the wind, wet and snow out. It's been given a 1000mm hydrostatic head, so it is technically a waterproof fabric, so light showers and obviously snow-drift won't be a problem. The inner fabric uses a Pertex Quantum inner, which again is super lightweight and has an excellent weight to strength ratio.

The Neutrino Endurance has been made with a stitch through baffle construction. Spec wise, the jacket comes with a fixed down filled hood with a wired peak plus adjustable velcro cuffs and a hem drawcord. You've also got a few pockets to play around with too, with 2 handwarmer pockets and 1 internal security pocket. A 2 way water resistant YKK front zip with internal down filled zip baffle ensures the chill and snow won't make it's way in.

The jackets lightweight construction means the Neutrino only weighs in at 625g. We've got an array of colours in stock; Electric Blue, Black, Zest, Twilight, Cayenne and Mango.

The Mountain Equipment Classic Lightline Jacket is another stellar piece. This iconic jacket is ideal for British Winter's and Alpine use. It's got a 90/10 365g pure down fill, with a fill power of 675. The stitch through baffle construction ensures that weight is kept down and a Drilite Outer provides totally windproof and water resistant protection. Theres also an adjustable, stud-off hood, so if you don't fancy wearing it you can always pop it to one side while you venture on out.

2 zipped handwarmer pockets provide an ideal place to keep smaller essentials, and obviously somewhere to stick your hands if you don't happen to be wearing any gloves. For keeping more valuable items safe you always have an internal security pocket and to provide the best fit possible the Lightline has adjustable cuffs and a dual tether hem drawcord.

Something For The Weekend #16

Coming back to you on our regular Wednesday slot, as the title may suggest, It's this weeks Something For The Weekend. In a week that's seen the red mist decend on a certain England centre forward we're here again to attend to your weekend needs.

The week that was has also seen quite a major announcement in the ODK office, with Katie on our customer service team taking the opportunity to go and work in Norway for 5 months, it's a once in a lifetime chance and hopefully we'll be seeing her again in the near future to regale us with stories of her Scandinavia adventures. Not only has she been a vital member of the customer service team, she's been a fantastic part of the Outdoorkit family for the last year or so, so suffice to say she'll sorely be missed! When we next see her after her Scandanavian tour we expect her to be speaking flawless Norwegian too!

Right, onwards and upwards, what have we got this weekend? Well first up, an idea coming from our friends from Country Walking Magazine, weather permitting, why not give Tryfan a go?

Tryfan's a considerably challenging peak to conquer, it's aesthetics being more in keeping with something you'd expect to see on the back of a Stegosaurus. Consequently, all of it's ascents involve a certain amount of scrambling. If your not a fan of a leisurely scramble then Country Walking point out a more walkable route by the name of Heather Terrace. The route might put more emphasis on your legs than your legs and feet together, however it still has a certain amount of foreboding attached to it. Not that we want to put you off you understand, but it always seems better to overestimate your challenge than underestimate it. It's a rocky route, with crags above and cliffs below.

The route CW have fitted out gives you just over 8km of walking/scrambling with a healthy 5hr completion time. Theres only really one cafe near by, so stocking up on plenty of your own fluids and energy foods would be advisable! The route sees you starting off from the south of Llyn Ogwen, following the A5 North-Easterly of Tryfan itself, then scurring back down with Tryfan on your right, where the scrambling begins, unless you decide to take on Heather Terrace. After your successful summit, you'll see yourself arrowing back up again with Llyn Bochlywd on your left hand side, until you reach Ogwen Cottage where you can stop for a well earned breather. From there you follow the A5 back round to your starting position. Simples!

If a tranquill bike ride is more your thing, why not check out the Sky Ride inititive, which is trying to bring cycling to the masses. The route on show today is the Cheshire Lakes and Tatton Park. Setting off this Sunday at 10am the 11.4m route starts off in the idyllic village of Ashley and takes in a varied combination of scenic Cheshire lanes, roads and tracks. This particular ride has been classified in the 'Brisk' category with speeds getting up to around 9-10 mph.

Linking in with the Sky Ride inititive, it's also worth mentioning a new charity that has just been set up called 'Go Make It Happen'. It's been set up in aid of Sam Harding, who tragically lost his life while riding his bike in London. The aim of the charity is to give young people a leg up, an opportunity to fulfill their own potential. A fundraiser is being organised for the end of the year and Sky Ride have kindly donated a signed cycling bib by one of the members of Westlife!

Lap of Honour 2013

We've got another fantastic cause to give a bit of backing to! On Friday the 29th March 2013 Ian Innes will be walking 300 miles with a 50lb rucksack on his back, in 10 days.

Named 'The Lap Of Honour' the walk is taking place in aid of Help For Heroes, a charity which provides practical help and support to service men and women who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty. So it really is a great event to get behind!

Newbies in the House

I'm not rejoicing in the sudden change of weather, far from it, I love it when the sun decides to grace the sky, but now the weather is actually acting like it should it doesn't make me feel like such a twonk talking about lusciously warm down jackets when its a sweltering 25°C outside!

So with normality resumed, let's have a look at some new Winter pieces we've received over the last week or so.

First on our list are the Hunter Original Tall Snow Boots. Their essentially the Winter model of the Tall Classics. The main differences are that the Snow Boots have a 4mm neoprene lining for extra warmth when you fancy venturing out into cold or snowy conditions. You also get more underfoot protection with a Vibram snowshoe outer sole which features IceTrek technology, giving you a lot more traction on slippery surfaces.

Like all our Hunter Boots the upper has a vulcanised rubber construction which has been built on an Orthopaedic last for that legendary Hunter fit.

Also new into us this week was the Mountain Equipment Men's Gasherbrum Jacket. It might sound like a rather random name, but 'Gasherbrum' is actually the name given to a group of peaks located in the Karakorum range of the Himalayan's. I remember thinking when I first started this job what a silly name 'Nuptse' was and then you come to realise literally every name means something. You could have hours of fun typing random product names into Google and finding out where they originate from. That would be an excellent specialist subject on Mastermind.

Anyway, I digress, on to the jacket itself! It's been designed with alpine climbs in mind, but putting it simply, it'll keep you toasty if you trek out to anywhere cold. It's got a box wall construction, so your guaranteed maximum warmth throughout. The Gasherbrum also features an insulated super alpine helmet compatible hood and 2-way YKK moulded zipper behind a insulated storm flap. To keep your paws warm theres two handwarmer pockets and to keep your liquids neatly tucked away theres also an internal water bottle holder.

Something For The Weekend #15

A day later than usual, but still coming at you with the same vigour and excitement for the coming weekend, it is of course this weeks Something For The Weekend. It's been a rather busy week this week, we've all been pulling our weight in the Outdoorkit Warehouse, helping to put up racking and shelves to make room for all the shiny new products this Autumn/Winter! Plus today is the first day in a long while that I've actually felt a bit of a chill in the air, with that pinching Great British air knocking into you as you leave the warmth of your house first thing in the morning and make your way out to your car.

The main event for you this week is the Peak District Mountain Bike Challenge 2011. It's all happening this Saturday, 8th October in Hope Valley, Derbyshire. The Bike Challenge gives riders of all experience groups exciting biking routes, plus stunning views of the Peaks.

Theres a choice of four routes, which are as follows...

1. Adventure Route (Approx 14 miles) A great introduction to the Dark Peaks, Although this is our shortest route, it will provide you with some technical rocky trails, big hills and wonderful views.

2. Advanced Route (Approx 23 miles) This route is suited to more experienced riders wanting to ride some of the more technical trails, taking in some Dark Peak classics. Expect big hills and loose rocks.

3. Extreme Route (Approx 34 miles) For very fit and competent riders only, this is the ultimate off road biking experience. With 34 miles of steep hills and technical terrain, this really is a tough challenge.

4. Ultimate Route (Approx 42 miles) For very fit and competent riders only, this is the ultimate off road biking route. With 42 miles of steep hills, technical terrain and exposed stretches, this is the toughest of them all!

Unfortunately advanced registration for the event is now closed, however you can still get down there and register on the day at Hope Valley College. Registration times for the Ultimate and Extreme routes are 9.30am - 9.45am and for the Adventure and Advanced Routes 9.50am- 10am. Happy biking!

Grand Designs Live! Now having lived with someone who 'read' Architecture at University, I know just how revered Mr Kevin McCloud and his his empire of Grand Designs really is! Starting tomorrow and going through to Sunday, Grand Designs Live is coming to the NEC in Birmingham for one massive extravaganza.

The event packs in ideas and inspiration for the home with specific areas dedicated to interiors, kitchens, bathrooms plus technologies and gardens. Theres all sorts of unique products on offer. Over 500 exhibitors will be on show as well as 100's of seminars and work shops, giving you the low down all things design orientated.

Jackets for hitting the slopes

We had two new ski orientated jackets in last month, so I thought we'd have a closer inspection of them this morning. Plus it's ever so slowly getting cooler this week, so I don't feel as much as a prune talking about 700 fill down jackets...

Let's start off with The North Face Women's Sesia Down Jacket. Like the blog title implies, it's been made with the slopes in mind. It comes with the essential mountain features you'd expect; a snap down adjustable powder skirt to help keep the snow drift out, goggle pocket to keep your eyewear safe and an adjustable hem.

Insulation wise, it packs in a 600 down fill, so theres ample warmth to be had while your on the mountain side. It also has a water resistant outer, to help bead away light showers and of course snow drift when you venture out to colder terrains. The Sesia also features all the specs you'd expect from a North Face Jacket; 2 handwarmer pockets, adjustable hood, internal lycra cuffs, internal media security pocket to keep things like your mobile phones and MP3 players safe.

We've currently got the Women's Sesia Down Jacket in three colours; a vibrant Tubby Purple, TNF White and TNF Black.
Moving on to menswear, we have The North Face Hecktic Down Jacket. Again it's been designed for big mountain skiers and other snow sport fanatics. As an added safety feature it comes with Recco av alanche rescue reflector's, and if you fancy a bit of climbing in the snow or just want some added protection the Hecktic has an adjustable, helmet compatible hood as well.

Helvellyn clear up a huge success

Last week saw 120 volunteers and 50 school children descend on the Helvellyn area to help with a major clear up of the slopes. 10.5km of footpath were cleaned, 25 metres of dry stone wall was rebuilt and school children from Patterdale and Yanwath helped build a red squirrel hide and learned about water and conservation, so fingers crossed the Lake District will be in safe hands in the coming years!

The Event 'Fell Care Day' was organised by the Friend's of the Lake District's 'Flora of the Fells' project and was used to highlight the massive role that volunteers play in helping to conserve and manage the fells. Over 20 other organisations took part and cakes were donated by local cafes and shops to keep the volunteers energies up.

The entire clean up produced 14 full bags of rubbish from the area, pointing to the fact that unfortunately there are still walkers that choose to deposit their rubbish in an untoward fashion. It comes down to laziness a lot of the time, with walkers (only a small percentage though I hope) choosing to simply discard what is not needed on the floor rather than take a little bit more time to find a bin or just as easily stick it in their pack and throw away or recycle it at home. But thanks to all the volunteers who took part, the slopes and surrounding area of Helvellyn are clean and gleaming once more!

Days like this are invaluble for conserving some of the most beautiful hills and mountains in the country and without them we just simply wouldn't be able to enjoy places like the Lake District and Peaks like we do.

Two Boots To Keep You Warm This Winter

I know, I know, it's still going to be pushing 25°C today, but there's no harm in preparing yourself for that time when temperatures do start plummet is there? That's why we're taking a look at two new Winter Boots for the Autumn/Winter Season, their both sure to keep your feet snug while everything else around you shivers.

New into us last month was the Merrell Men's Ice Jam Waterproof Boot. It's been made with a combination Suede and Synthetic upper, providing durability while helping to keep the overall weight of the boot down. The Ice Jam has a watertight construction, with a waterproof TPU shell and seams that have been waterproofed from the inside, resulting in a shoe that has the ultimate barrier against the wet and snow.Not only is the Ice Jam waterproof, it's got more than a healthy dose of warmth with 400g of Merrell Opti-Warm synthetic insulation. So it really has been engineered with bitterly cold winters in mind, which by the sound of it we'll be getting this year (even though it really doesn't seem like it at the moment).

Other features include a bellows tongue to keep debris out, a snow shoe strap ridge and gaiter D-ring attachment. This boot packs in plenty of comfort as well, with a dual density anatomical footbed which has also been treated with Aegis Antimicrobial solution to help ward off those pesky odours. Merrell Air Cushion equips the Ice Jam Boot with excellent comfort and shock absorbency.

If you do want to venture out into the ice and snow, the boot's 6mm lug depth and Ice Jam/Sticky Rubber sole will provide ample traction to stop you sliding all over the show.

Our second boot for you today is the colourfully named North Face Women's Snow Betty Boot. Like the Merrell Ice Jam, it's been designed with the cold in mind. Built with a women's specific fit it has a bounty of comfort (not the coconut orientated chocolate bar) and squeezes in as much warmth as possible. 200g of Heatseeker insulation ensures ultimate warmth, no matter where you trek of to and waterproof BLC complient suede and a waterproof construction provides excellent protection against wet, damp and snowy underfoot conditions.

To help retain heat inside the boot and for added luxury the Snow Betty has a plush faux fur collar lining and Dri Lex fleece inside. Along with fantastic weather protection the boot comes with all day comfort in mind. It features a dual molded EVA shell with built in flex zones and an injection molded EVA midsole. For good traction on slippery surfaces and terrains the Snow Betty has a durable TNF Winter grip rubber sole.

Review: The Bergans Kvitfjell Insulated Down Jacket

Seeing as we had our first major drop of Bergans Of Norway a few weeks ago, I thought we'd have a closer inspection of one of the new jackets we'd had in from them. We also had Andrew Baguley, one of our Bergans Reps, come down to give us the low down on some of the new bits and bobs and one of the jackets that really caught our eyes was the Kvitfjell Insulated Down Jacket.

It's been made using a combination of 95/5 High Quality Goose Down (750 fill power) and 100% Polyester padding. The down has been strategically placed closer to the body for optimum insulation. On the outside the Kvitfjell uses Pertex Shield for water repellent, windproof, breathable lightweight protection. It's well suited for skiing, so if your planning on hitting the slopes anytime soon, it may be well worth giving the Kvitfjell your consideration!

Now with the 'techyish' specifications out of the way, let's move on to some of the jackets key features. First up theres an insulated hood with drawstring adjustment, the hood is also helmet compatible. It's the smaller details that seem to really impress, like for instance the wide fleece strip that runs around the neck area, just adding that extra bit of next to skin comfort and warmth. Working our way down, the jacket has a centre front storm flap to keep the chill out, pit zips if you get a bit too flustered and two chest pockets ideal for storing maps and other smaller essentials.

Inside the jacket you've got one fairly large inner pocket, suitable for storing your more valuable items like mobile phones and other important travel documents. Another added bonus is the headphone eyelet, making sure you won't be without your tunes wherever you venture off to.

To ensure you don't get the winter chill, wind or rain making it's way up the sleeves into your torso region the cuffs have softshell like wrist warmers with thumb holes, so it fits snuggly around your hands without limiting flexibility or the jackets ability to retain heat.

(A career in hand modelling isn't imminent...)

Another handy little feature (that you'll see on a lot of Bergans products) is the jackets ability to be compressed and packed away into it's own inner pocket, a very clever option when your travelling around with it, but not actually wearing it.

Altogether the Kvitfjell Insulated weighs in at 1.020kg, which is pretty lightweight when you consider the amount of insulation and details the jacket packs in. Having worn the jacket myself, it doesn't actually feel that heavy either, plus the cut and shape of the Kvitfjell means that everything moves as you move and it feels as though the jacket is almost part of you, as it were, unlike other jackets on occasions that can seem to be more cumbersome with bits sticking out all over the place.

En Route To Stansfield's Somliland

Here's another fantastic cause the lend your support to. At the beginning of 2012, accomplished explorers Christopher Stansfield and Kris McBride will embark on an epic journey across the Northern African desert from Port Sudan, next to the Red Sea, down to Djibouti and on into Somaliland (an unrecognised self declared sovereign state that is internationally recognised as an autonomous region of Somalia).

The whole trek is to highlight the health of the people of Somaliland, which is amongst the worst in Africa. Their trek will actually end at Edna Adna's Maternity Hospital, an organisation their also trying to raise awareness for. Edna Adna was the first qualified Somali midwife and went on to be the World Health Organisation's regional nursing advisor. She eventually upped sticks and sold everything she had to build her very own Maternity Hospital in Somaliland itself, which has proven to be a valuable institution for women in the surrounding area.

As well as providing valuable health care to women in Somaliland the Edna Adna Maternity Hospital also tries to provide help and guidance to address the problem of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and all the complications it can cause. The money donated from Christopher and Kris's trek will help provide new equipment and training for Somalian women to become midwives and nurses. Obviously the money raised will also contribute to keeping the Maternity Hospital running on a day to day basis, providing locals with valuable healthcare.

It's an absolutely fantastic cause and any money donated can make a difference. If you'd like to donate, you can go to the Edna Adna Maternity Hospital website. We've donated some Platypus Hydration Reservoir's, first aid kit, Head Torches and some washing products ourselves, so hopefully that will see them through!

Something For The Weekend #14

Something is definitely out of sync this week, 20°C plus at the end of September? Absolutely crackers, won't complain too much though, it is lovely out there! On the flip side we're still very much expecting a rather nippy, snowy Winter ahead, so make sure you get your insulated's on in preparation. We even had a bit of a Bergans trying on session last week, I was quite taken by the Kvitfjell Insulated Down Jacket, surprisingly lightweight and minimalist considering the amount of quality insulation it packs in.

Time to get down to the nitty gritty of finding something to do this weekend. This week we've got a route in Snowdonia as featured in November's edition of Trail. The route is 'Pen-y-Pass to Idwal Cottage' which follows the main Glyderau Ridge, taking in the Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach peaks. The terrain can be steep with rocky crest's and high sided corries.

Here's the step by step route as listed by Trail Magazine...

1. From the back of the youth Hostel gain the broad shoulder overlooking Llyn Cwmffynnon. Head north-west to the base of the broad south ridge of Glyder Fawt, then climb the ridge direct to the summit.

2. Head east-north-east along the main ridge, passing the impressive rocks of Castell Y Gwynt to reach the summit rocks of Glyder Fach.

3. Descend east, watching out for The Cantilever Stone, and aim for the broad col occupied by Llyn Caseg-Fraith.

4. From just above the col pick up the Miners Track and follow it north-west as it traverses below the crags of Glyder Fach to reach Bwlch Tryfan.

5. From the col, either make a short out and back ascent of Tryfan, or continue down the Miners Track to Idwal Cottage Youth Hostel at the western end of Llyn Ogwen.

Altogether the route is 9km in length and has a total ascent of 750m. The approach to Glyder Fawr is possibly the hardest part of the route, but you can get that out the way fairly quickly, allowing you to relax somewhat and enjoy the rest of the ridge.

I must admit there seems to be a reccuring theme for this part of the blog. It's always seems to involve food! It might be partly down to the fact that everyone in the office takes part in 'Munchies Monday' where we all take it in turns to cook something delicious (or not) and then bring it in to be devoured at the beginning of the week, so we just have food on the membrane. Or it might be just that we all love our food in the U.K. so much that there's always at least one farmers market somewhere over a weekend!

This week we thought Notting Hill Farmers Market was well worth a glance. The markets been up and running since September 1999 and it's regarded as one of the areas best kept secrets with all sorts of produce available. You can get fresh eggs, freshly cut flowers, the best quality meats around plus an eclectic assortment of fruit, veg and cheeses. The next meet is this Saturday, 9am-1pm, 1st October. The market itself is just tucked away behind Notting Hill Tube Station.

We've had a rather tasty Salomon delivery in this week, including a whole mix of trainers, boots and mocs! Typical really that we've had some cosy Winter footwear come through our doors when the 'Indian Summer' is well underway, how long it might last however is anyone's guess!

Here's a run down of three new items we've had in!

Let's start off with the Salomon Men's Switch Boo ts. It's got the aesthetics of a high end skateboard shoe with the added bonus of being both durable and warm. The Switch boots uses 'Thinsulate' insulation. It works by trapping air molecules between you and the outside of the boot and because of the fine fibres the fabric uses it manages to trap the optimum amount of warmth in the least amount of space, so pretty damn clever really.
The upper of the boot features foam in the heel for extra shock absorbency and comfort. It's also been made with waterproof oiled nubuck leather, to give it a good amount of ruggedness and obviously protection from the wet and damp. The sole has been made with a non marking winter contragrip, molded EVA sockliner and molded EVA midsole, making them ideal for tackling uneven terrains.

Second up, we've got the Speedcross 3 CS Trainer s. Like the Speedcross 3, except without 'Climashield' (CS). It's insulation that's lightweight, durable and thermally efficient. Plus it's also exceedingly compressible so there's no added bulk to be had. The upper of the trainer has been made with an anti-debris mesh, to help keep out those annoying bit's of gravel and dirt. It's also been constructed with water resistant textiles to give a good amount of protection against wetter conditions and environment.The Speedcross 3 CS also includes a handy lace pocket to store smaller essentials in. The shoes use Salomon's own Quicklace system for easy on/off. The outsole of the trainer uses non marking contragrip and has a lightweight muscle chassis. For plenty of shock absorbency and comfort the Speedcross 3 CS comes ready with Molded EVA and Injected EVA Midsole. They come in three rather vibrant colours; Terracotta/Black/Pop Green, Vibrant Blue-X/Aluminium/Terracotta and Black/Bright Red.

Last but not least we have the Salomon RX Snowmock LTR. They've been designed to appeal to those who've been out for a days hard skiing but need something soft, comfy and supportive to wear back at the lodge. Even if your not an avid skier mind, their still a great slip on option!

They've been made with a waterproof, nubuck leather for durable protection and a barrier between you and the wet and damp outside. They feature a protective rubber toe cap, so they can be worn in more rugged places, plus theres a furry synthetic lining for a luxurious, cushioned feel. The sole of the Snowmoc uses non marking contragrip for underfoot security. They also use Salomon's OS Tendon and OS Muscle technology to help soothe your muscles after a hard days adventuring. Theres also an injected EVA midsole for optimum shock absorbency.

Something For The Weekend #13

The last couple of weeks has seen the new gear flying in. We've had Buff, Caterpillar, Jack Wolfskin, Bergans and Jack Link's all roll into the warehouse. So we're more than prepared for the Winter chill and that's without more imminent drops of the likes of The North Face, Haglofs and Berghaus Winter warmers!

But without further ado, let's have a look at a few possibilities to help fill up your weekends!

First up, why not have a relaxing amble around Buckinghamshire. Filled with picturesque villages and scenic lanes, Bucks has plenty to offer the avid walker. Of course, to the south of the county you have the rolling Chiltern Hills. Designated as an 'area of outstanding natural beauty' in the 1960's, the Chilterns highest peak is 876ft at Haddington Hill, close to Wendover.

You could even go and follow the Icknield Way, an ancient trackway that served the Anglo-Saxons. It was also said to have been part of the 'four highways' of Medieval Britain, along with Ermine Street, Fosse Way and Watling Street. The Four Highways were thought to have been constructed by royal authority and anyone who travelled on them had royal protection, so you can't find a safer walking route than Icknield Way! The existance of these ancient paths also lead to the existance of ancient civilisations and outposts, which you might be able to have a closer look at yourselves if you pay a visit.

If theres any Vicar Of Dibley fans out there then it may be interesting to note the opening credits of the show featured an aerial shot of Stokenchurch Gap, a steep chalk cutting constructed through the Chiltern Hills, although you'll have to venture over the border into Oxfordshire for a wee gander.

For a walk slap bang in the middle of the Chilterns the Disraeli's Des Res route at Hughenden Manor is definitely worth a look.

The Taste Cumbria Food Festival. It's a weekend long celebration of Cumbria's finest food and drink and I'm sure theres going to be a plethora of samples on offer, as well as the chance to take some delicious goodies home with you! The Festival itself is taking place this weekend, 24th-25th September. You can buy tickets or a wristband here, to sample everything the festival has to offer.

You can also buy seperate tickets for celebrity demonstations. Celebrity Chefs heading up to Cumbria include the one and only Hairy Bikers, Tom Kitchin (fantastically appropriate name) and Ravinder Bhogal. The Autumn/Winter Season is well and truly on the way! And theres certainly no reason to be glum about it, infact we positively embrace the cold here at Outdoorkit, especially when we've got all manner of winter warmers lined up! Bergans for instance absolutely excells in the cold.

We've just had a rather sumptuous delivery scanned into stock this afternoon, so it's fresh in! For an in depth history of the company you can check out their 'A Century Of Adventure' online booklet!

Specialising in Down products, Bergans clothing ensures fantastic warmth for bitterly cold days. They also use their own waterproofing system 'Dermizax'. The fabric is a Hydrophilic material, unlike most other membranes which are micro porous. The fact that the material is Hydrophilic means that it doesn't have pores that can get clogged up with dirt, soap powder, salt water etc. This means the garment maintains it's properties even when dirty. Dermizax 2-layer has a hydrostatic head of 20,000mm, so wet weather as well as cold weather won't be a problem. You also get a Durable Water Repellent coating on the outside to help bead the soggyness away.

Something For The Weekend #12

In a week where the Rugby World Cup has kicked off, we're back for another Something For The Weekend. It's the big tournements that seem to excite even non Rugby fans. Being a self confessed Football nut myself, I never thought I'd get excited about Scotland vs Georgia kicking off at 8-30am in the morning. But there I was before I shot off to work, watching the Georgians proudly singing their national anthem and the scots belting out flower of Scotland. It's the same with tennis, I hardly watch a set all year, then Wimbledon or the US Open crops up and I'm completely fixated by it. Maybe I'm a 'fair weather' sports fan or perhaps I focus too much of my attention on the footy! Tonga vs Romania should be a cracker...

Anyway, I digress, back to the great outdoors! Inspired by an article in this months Country Walking Magazine, I thought it'd be rather pleasant to look at a renowned walk in the South-West. The Bath Skyline route consists of 6 miles of way-marked trails situated to the east of Bath city centre. With the route being quite elevated you end up with some stunning views of the beautiful and historic city. Heres one of the main routes provided by the National Trust.

1 Standing on Bathwick Hil, with your back to Cleveland Walk, take the path opposite that goes between houses. Go through kissing gate (KG) and bear left (L) diagonally across field. Through next KG, after 75m go through another KG and enter Richens Orchard. Exit Orchard through another KG and follow track right. Go through KG, down slope and steps and follow until KG. Cross track to next KG and bear diagonally R uphill.

2 Go through KG into field opposite and bear R diagonally uphill to KG. Bear diagonally L uphill across next field towards houses. At far corner turn R immediately after KG to road. Turn L uphill on road. After last house turn R across road and follow path uphill through woods. At KG turn R and follow path straight ahead to gap in wall. 100m across next field take path bearing R away from main gravel track. Enter trees, cross a junction of tracks and follow steps downhill with railings on R. At bottomof slope turn L before KG, keeping railings on your R.

3 At gateway turn L uphill through trees to playing fields then turn R, keeping fence on your L. Keep on round perimeter of field, then go through metal gate onto gravel track. Go straight across, through KG into woodland. Keep straight on across private drive, pass field on L and keep on through more woodland. Follow path to R as it skirts an old quarry and finally arrive at houses at woodland edge.

4 Turn L through KG into field. Keep field boundary on R and at end of field take the R of two gates and follow path along wall. At main road turn L and after 25m turn R down narrow footpath. Go straight on at playing field, keeping boundary immediately on L and come to RSPCA home on L.

5 Turn R on road and after 100m turn L over stone stile in wall. After 20m turn R at crossing path, go through gate, then L onto track. Follow to first corner of field, go through KG and bear L across field. At corner, where field and woodland meet, go through KG and cross field, following woodland edge to your R.

6 At end of field go through KG and enter Bathampton Woods. At first fork bear R and keep to main trail through woods.

7 Leave woods and straight on. Bear L, slightly uphill, heading towards the R of the TV masts. As you approach the masts, there’s a woodland on R and a golf course on L. The path gradually moves away from the woodland and joins a track just to the R of the masts.

8 Follow track to second KG on R, down into woods. Path drops down very steeply through trees, then go to L just before a wire fence. Continue on path, winding through trees, go up some wooden steps to viewpoint and stone pillars of golf club drive. Here, make a short detour to Sham Castle then return to route and go through KG on R of stone pillars and follow path downhill with field boundary on L. Alternatively, for a level walk, continue from the Castle to and follow path, keeping plantation on L, across field to stile. Cross wooden bridge and continue along track through car park, at end turn R onto private road. Carry straight until Bathwick Hill, opposite Copseland. Walk down Copseland and cross Widcombe Hill to Quarry Farm. Continue along path to KG on R. Rejoin route at

9 At bottom of slope go through KG onto road (cross with care) and turn R along pavement. Take footpath L between a field and a garden and follow downhill to emerge onto Clevedon Walk. Turn L to Bathwick Hill and the start of the walk.

Sandra Shevey started the London Hitchcock walk in 1999 after becoming interested in his film locations after interviewing the man himself in the 1970's. The walk sporned when she managed to find out some of the locations from Hitchcock's biggest blockbusters, such as 'Frenzy', 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' and 'The Paradine Case'.

Having received quite a healthy amount of Jack Wolfskin over the last week or so, we thought we'd give a run down of some of their own materials and fabrics, because we know some of the technologies can become a tad confusing at times, especially when it comes to waterproofing with a multitude of fabrics and membranes on offer.

Starting with Jack Wolfskin's waterproofing fabrics, let's have a look at Texapore first.

Texapore Twillsuede 2L - Weather protection and breathability are teamed in soft, flowing Texapore fabric that was developed especially for the more 'urban' weatherproof jacket: the face fabric fabric consists of slightly structured polyester/nylon twill that is distinguised by it's particularly smooth surface feel. The inner surface of the fabric is coated with microporous PU.

Texapore Taslan 2L - A classic trekking fabric, extensively proven. A very robust 2-ply material with a waterproof and breathable Texapore coating. The face fabric is a robust and water repellent Texapore Taslan 2L nylon. The reverse has a microporous PU coating. Waterproofing spec: 6,000mm water column.

Texapore Taslite 2L - The weight optimised version of Texapore Taslan 2L. It is similarly resistant to mechanical abrasion and just as hard wearing as the original but is slightly lighter in weight. Hydrostatic head: 6,000mm.

Texapore 4X4 2L - Used in basic weather protection apparel. A Texapore material with a water column of 4,000. The microporous PU coating is applied to Polyamide support fabric.

Texapore Smoothlight 2L - Thanks to it's smooth face fabric made from special yarn, Texapore Smoothlight is "quieter" than other versions of Texapore. The back side features a microporous PU Coating. Waterproof spec: 6,000 water column.

Texapore Function 65 2L - This is a combination and functional synthesis of two proven Jack Wolfskin functional materials. The hard-wearing functional material Function 65, which is made of 65 % polyester and 35 % organic cotton, is combined with waterproof, very breathable Texapore. The result is a waterproof, breathable, and very robust weather-protective matt material that feels like a natural textile. It has a waterproof spec of 6,000 mm hydrostatic head.

Review: Mountain Equipment Men's Kalanka Jacket

We had Alex in from Mountain Equipment last week, just giving us a run down of the new gear we've got this season and some of the changes that have been made to their key pieces. One jacket that really stood out to everyone in the office was the Kalanka Jacket.

It's new in to us this season and it oozes performance as well as having a sleek, lightweight and low profiled design.

Starting at the core of the jacket, The Kalanka uses 3-Layer Stretch Gore-Tex Pro Shell. The fabric gives fantastic performance in the most extreme of conditions, which is why many outdoor professionals swear by it. Not only is it waterproof, it's also windproof and has top notch breathability.

Starting from the head down, the first impressive feature you come across is the Super Alpine Helmet Compatible Hood. The hood now features grippy urethane strips on the inside to stop your helmet moving away from your hood and to ensure when you move your head, the hood moves with it, stopping that annoying problem of looking left or right and being confronted with the dark interior of your hood. This ingenius hood system also comes on the new Tupilak II Jacket.

The Kalanka also uses RiRi Zips, where every tooth is moulded individually and they lock tightly together to stop the possibility of water breaking through, making them more water resistant than your regular YKK zips. You can tell how tightly the zips bind together if you hold the zip up to the light, usually you can see the gaps appearing, not with these RiRi zips though!

The jacket itself comes with 2 large chest pockets and 2 A4 sized napoleon pockets. For extra ventilation the Kalanka also features 2 way water resistant pit zips. For a comfortable and adjustable fit the jacket has adjustable cuffs and dual tether hem drawcords. Something For The Weekend #11

We're back again to dabble into the wonderful world of the weekend. Last week we featured the 'Ring Of Steall' route in The Mamores and Poker in the Park in Hannover Square and like every week we've got two fresh ideas today!

Up first we've got a 'Sunset and Night Walk'. The walk see's you ascend to the highest point in the Peak District to view the sunset and take on the stunning surrounding views, all while sipping an inviting cup of hot chocolate.

After taking in the sunset it's off for the remainder of the night walk. There will be two possible routes, the first following the Pennine Way down Jacob's Ladder or circling around the southern edge, passing Crowden Clough to Grinslow Knoll. The plan is to arrive back at Edale between 11pm and 12pm. It's only £20 per person and a kit list is provided on booking your place. Suffice to say a headtorch would come in handy!

If you fancy staying the night in the area there's B & B's and camping available around Edale itself.

If your based in the south of the country and your looking for something a bit closer to home, the Thames Festival 2011 is well worth getting yourself down to! It's taking place between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge this weekend and there's plenty going on. Theres food and drink in abundance at the Thames Feast, you can touch up on your dancing skills with Al Fresco Tango and you can even brush up on your photography!

Probably the best thing about the whole festival is that all the events are entirely free! So you can get down and enjoy yourself, take in the entertainment and not have to blow an exceedingly large hole in your wallet at the same time.

Carrying on from the back end of last week where we highlighted a few of the key pieces we received in from Jack Wolfskin, here's a few more that are well worth your consideration!

Possibly the furriest jacket in Jack Wolfskin's range, we've got the Women's Kodiak Jacket! A little like TNF's Mossbud range, the Kodiak Jacket is a cuddly affair, having been made with Nanuk 200 Highloft fleece. So your guaranteed warmth and good heat retention, although you may have to put up with people stroking you every so often! The Kodiak comes with two hip pockets, ideal for storing smaller essentials and a full length zip.

Next in line is the Women's Wave Hill 3-in-1 Park a. The Wave Hill has been given a longer length cut for excellent weather protection, especially useful when colder conditions approach. This 3-in-1 has been made with Texapore Functio n Organic 65, for durable, waterproof and breathable performance. Theres more than enough room in the Wave Hill to store all your accessories in with 1 chest pocket, 2 raised hip pockets and 2 normal hip pockets. Lucky the Penguin's new Teva shoes!

Teva have really pushed the boat out on their newest venture, they've designed a custom boot for Lucky the Penguin! Lucky was born with an abnormally developed foot and with the guys at Teva making footwear thats's ideal in water, then Penguin footwear was the obvious next step!

With the new boot, Lucky's life has been greatly enhanced. Teva list their two fundamental responsibilities as to "play" and "protect" and they've certainly done that with Lucky the Penguin!

New Berghaus For Autumn/Winter 2011

I think the weathers now got to a point where I don't feel quite as silly talking about new gear for Autumn/Winter 2011. For the past few months we've been doing sneak previews and reviews on everything we're expecting in this Winter, but it doesn't seem quite right doing a sneak preview on an 800 fill down jacket when it's been 30°C outside! Over the last few weeks the weather has been a little more in keeping with the gear we've been looking at!

Anyway, enough of the stereotypical British fascination with the weather, time to take a look at a few new pieces from Berghaus that we've received in this week.

First up, a new 3-in-1, The Men's Arisdale 3-in-1 Jacket. It's been made with a tried and tested 2L Gore-Tex Performance Shell, for excellent waterproofing and breathability. It's got a roll away hood, so if it's not pelting it down you can hide it away (until it does decide to start pelting it down). Enhancing the jackets breathability, it comes with pit zip ventilation. There's also ample room to store all your accessories and essentials with two zipped hand warmer pockets, an external chest pocket, internal security pocket and two zipped hand pockets in the inner fleece jacket.

Second in line is the Berghaus Men's Frenay Jac ket. This ones going to come in very handy when the going gets cold and blustery. It's been put down as a general purpose mountain jacket, but theres a plethora of other circumstances you can use it in, first couple that springs to mind is keeping warm at the Rugby or Football. It has been made with 2 layer Windstopper Active Shell for total windproofness and a optimum breathability. Inside the coat theres a synthetic Primaloft Insulation for fantastic warmth. I've got a Primaloft Jacket myself and I completely swear by it! Even the jackets fixed hood has insulation for a cocoon of warmth.

The jacket also features; two way YKK water resistant zips, 3 external zipped pockets, 1 internal zipped pocket, adjustable and elasticated hem drawcord and bonded self fabric cuff tabs with hook and loop adjustment.

Back again for Winter 2011 as well, The Berghaus Akka Down Jacket. A very popular 600 fill down jacket, it's more than ideal for the incoming colder conditions!

Jack Wolfskin Rolls Into Town!

Exciting times at Outdoorkit, we've just got our first drop of new Jack Wolfskin in for the Autumn/Winter 2011 season!

We've got an eclectic selection with fleeces, waterproofs and a fine array of 3-in-1 jackets!

Jack Wolfskin were founded in 1981 and have been producing first class, performance and liftstyle clothing ever since. They have numerous patents and use innovative technologies to keep you warm and dry. We thought we'd have a closer look at a few of the pieces we've got in today.

First up, let's have a gander at the Men's Merid ian Jacket. One of the lightest 3-in-1's in their range the Meridian uses Texpoare 4x4 2L for durable waterproofing. The inner jacket has been made with Nanuk 150 fleece for plenty of warmth during the colder months. The jacket has two hip pockets and a chest pocket, so theres enough storage space for all your little accessories and essentials. The basic hood keeps the jacket as light as possible, while all the while ensuring good protection against the elements. The Meridian also features; water resistant zips, offset front zip and articulated elbows for excellent dexterity. We've currently got it in two colours, a classy Moroccan Blue and a classic Shadow Black.

Moving on to more of a lifestyle piece, but still with ample weather protection, The Jack Wolfskin Women's Ottawa Coat. The Texapore Twillsuede 2L outer gives the coat a soft and velvety feel and has a Hydrostatic Head of 6000mm, for waterproofing, windproofing and very good breathability. Like the Meridian, the Ottawa has an inner jacket, but this time uses Nanuk 200, for a tad more loft and warmth. The jacket comes with 2 hip pockets, a secret pocket and an additional hood pocket. Again, it's articulated elbows ensure optimum flexibility for the wearer. We have the Ottawa in a rather fetching Dark Berry and a classic Black.

Moving onto the Wolfskin Down range, stepping up is the Men's Chogori XT Jacket. Made with Duck Down, it's sure to keep you warm for the Winter without being overly bulky and resulting in you looking like the much fabled Michelin Man. The Chogori comes with 2 hip pockets and two inner pockets, giving an ideal place to store more valubable items. It comes with it's own stuffsac for easy storage when not in use. Too make sure the pesky wind and cold won't sneak in, the jacket has been made with internal fleece cuffs. The detachable, padded hood also gives extra protection from the wind and rain.

Something For The Weekend #10

Ah, back at work after a refreshingly long weekend. I must say the cricket on Saturday was mindblowingly good, there was an unprecedented two bowl offs in the two semi finals which certainly added to the tension and the atmosphere and then Leicestershire came out as the surprise overall winners. The only slight downer on the day were the showers that seemed to occur every hour or so, but rain always seems to lend to the togetherness you experience at the Cricket, highlighted by the very kind bloke next to us lending us his brolly! When you work at an outdoor gear shop you really should know better than to NOT take a waterproof with you to the cricket! With a couple of beers down the hatch you tend not to notice being soggy too much however.

First up this week, we've got a walk in Scotland for you. It's the 'Ring Of Steall' just south of Fort William. This particular walk is located in a group of mountains called 'The Mamores' Which make up part of the Grampians and was featured on January's edition of Trail Magazine.

The starting and finishing point is the car park at the head of Glen Nevis road. Follow the path up the gorge to the hidden meadow at Steall, which is backed by the 100m Steall Falls. Get yourself across the infamous wire bridge across the water of nevis to reach the Steall Hut. Ascend steeply west-south-west through woods to an open bowl. Then traverse hard left below crags until it's possible to scramble up a short turfy step onto Sgurr a' Mhaim's north-east ridge. Climb this until you reach a shallow corrie where the ridge broadens and turns to the left. Scree and boulders lead to a meeting with the east ridge. Next up, tackle the summit pyramid, sticking to the crest until barred to a craggy crest. You then move slightly right before climbing ledge's on the left.

Onwards! Descend south the to narrow arete of the Devil's ridge. One of the first scrambles is a descent into a notch, which is exiled up a slabby rock step. Soon after this you pass a pinnacle via a groove on it's right, the arete then continues over a sharp summit before ending at a saddle. Next up you climb the stony slopes onto Sgurr an lubhair.

Climb the broad, stony ridge onto Am Bodach, then descend steeply north-east. A small unamed top follows and then the rounded peak of Stob Coire a' Chairn, where the main Mamores ridge is. Descend again to a bealach below the ragged fang of An Garbhanach, then climb the rough slopes immediately left of the crest to reach the knife edged peak.

To complete the walk you come through an easy scramble, which is made slightly easier if you keep the right as you go. From the top of An Gearanach descend the grassy north ridge until you overlook the shallow north corrie. Again keep to the right then back left to a cairn on a little shoulder. From this cairn zig zag down the corrie into Glen Nevis, cross a few bogs below Steall Falls and follow your steps from the beginning of the walk to get you back to the car park.

Poker in the park! It's basically the world's largest Poker Festival, with over 20,000 vistors expected. It's all happening in Hannover Square, just a short walk away from Oxford Circus. Now in it's fifth it's going to be bigger and better than ever with marquees, lectures and a new main stage.

So if you like a friendly flutter or just fancy a day out, then it's well worth checking in to see what's going on! It starts this Friday and continues through to Saturday. It's not all about Poker though, despite the name. On the main stage theres plenty of live music, card tricks, chest and Mahjong exhibitions!

Review: The Merrell Taiga Buckle Waterproof Boots

Following up from the new Merrell Barefoot Trainers we had in this week, we've also got a few new Winter pieces from Merrell. One of them being the Women's Taiga Buckle Waterproof Boot. The Taiga provides style and performance in a superbly warm package. It's been constructed with a waterproof full grain leather upper and breathable waterproof membrane, so if you encounter the odd shower or snow storm you know your feet will remain cosily dry.

If you suffer from cold tootsies, then the Taiga may well be the boot to go for. Inside theres a Polartec Thermo lining, which also adds a little bit more comfort and luxury to the boot. It's also been treated with Antimicrobial solution to help battle against those pesky odours.

On the more technical side the Taiga features a moulded nylon arch shank and compression moulded EVA footframe for stability and comfort. The boot also uses Merrell's own Q-Form comfort EVA midsole which provides women's specific stride sequenced cushioning. Merrell Barefoot: The Men's Sonic Glove and Women's Lithe Glove Trainers

Fresh in this week are the Merrell Men's Sonic Glove Trainer and the Women's Lithe Glove. But before we take a closer look at them, heres a story that you may have seen already! Personal Trainer Anthony Band has taken the Barefoot running theory literally and ran all the way from John O'Groats to Lands End without the aid of Vibram or Merrell Barefoot Trainers.

The feat (pun intended) was undertaken for the charity Help For Heroes who provide support and help for service men and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. He ran around 30 miles a day for a month, that's got to take it's toll! All in all a fantastic achievement!

Right, back to Merrell Barefooting. New in this week we've got the Men's Sonic Glove and Women's Lithe Glove. Both feature a fabric upper with a microfibre footbed that's been treated with Aegis Antimicrobial solution for excellent odour resistance.
The Trainers Omni-Fit lacing system provides a precise, glove like fit for that optmum barefooting experience. Midsole/Outsole consists of a 4mm compression moulded EVA midsole cushioning and 1mm shock absorption plate to maintain forefoot flexibility and underfoot protection. For second to non durability and traction, both the Sonic and Lithe Trainers have a Vibram Trail Glove sole with TC1 Rubber.The Women's Lithe version comes in two colours; Dark Shadow and Porcelain Rose and the Men's Sonic comes in Kryptonite Gradient and Black Gradient.

New Winter Jackets From The North Face

We've got three more new North Face jackets to have a look at this morning. We had a look at some of the new fleeces a couple of days ago, now it's the turn for Winter jackets. Theres been a few revisions, style and name changes like the Cassius Triclimate taking over from the Amplitude, but here's the low down on a few newbies!

The North Face Mountain Light Triclimate Jacket. New for this season, it's taken over from The Primavera and it packs a punch. It's got a 3-layer Gore-Tex Performance shell for waterproof, breathable and durable assurance. Under the shell you get a 550 fill down inner jacket that's very similar in style and look to the Nuptse Jack et, just a little less bulky otherwise you'll end up looking like yo u know wh o. It comes with all the essential features; fully adjustable & removable hood, two alpine pockets, adjustable cuffs, hem cinchcord and a velcro stormflap closure. We've got three colours expected in this Winter; Deepwater Blue, TNF Red, TNF Black and Asphalt Grey.

Second up we've got the North Face Yellowband Parka. Like the Mountain Light Triclimate it's somewhat of a replacement, this time for the Ice Jacket, but it's been revamped and reinvigorated for the Autumn/Winter 2011 season. It's a shorter length Parka in comparision to others, but it still gives plenty of coverage from the weather. It's got a faux fur trimmed hood to keep the wind and rain away from your face, plus the hood itself is fully adjustable, removable and insulated.

The Yellowband comes with ample storage space with two hand pockets, internal security pocket, bicep pocket and two snap down chest pockets. The Parka uses Hyvent 2L for superior wateproofing and breathability. Inside theres loads of warmth to be had with a 550 fill goose down insulation. The jacket comes in some highly churpy colours; Drummer Blue, Fig Green, Dark Eggplant Purple plus the ever classic TNF Black.

Completely new in this season is the Argento Hoodie. This one's certain to keep you toasty, it's got a 700 fill goose down insulation and uses Hyvent for waterproof and breathable assurance. It features a fully adjustable drop hood, glove loops, hem cinchcord and stretch wrist gaiters. Like the previous two theres more than enough space to store all your much needed essentials with a chest cargo pocket, internal stretch water bottle pocket and two cargo hand pockets.

We've got the Argento coming in four colours; Fig Green, Drummer Blue, TNF Red and TNF Black.

Something For The Weekend #9

This weeks rather propelled by so far! Monday shot by in a flash and then we had Jules our North Face rep pop in yesterday for a bit of enlightenment on their new Autumn/Winter ranges, before we knew it the clock had struck 5-30pm and another day at Outdoorkit HQ had passed. But enough about the week at work, let's look forward to those two shining beacons that fall just after Friday, that we like to call plurally, The Weekend.

If your up in Bonny Scotland this weekend, why not go and say hello to a certain Mr Ben Cruachan. Situated south of Fort William and north westerly of Glasgow, it's a classic Pyramid Peak which dominates the surrounding areas of Loch Awe and Lock Etive. The Mountain actually has a hydroelectric powerstation inside one of it's caverns with a reservoir located down the bottom of the horseshoe shaped ridges.

One of the favoured routes brings you full circle around the peaks, starting off at Loch Awe, on to Ben Cruachan itself, over to Stob Diamh and then back down past the reservoir back to the Loch. It's about an 8 mile walk in all (No Eminen references please) and has been graded as 'Easy'. Giving you enough time to thoroughly enjoy the walk and get a few magnificent photo snaps along the way, 5 hours will see you round nicely.

It's 2020 Cricket Finals day! If your not a fan of watching test match cricket, then 2020 might well be the tournement to get you into the sport! Essentially each match consists of 40 overs, with each team getting 20 overs to bat and smash as many runs as possible. It's all a lot more fast paced compared to test match cricket, plus there's fielding restrictions in place to encourage higher scoring games. As a day out it's fantastic. This year it's at Edgbaston and theres loads to keep you occupied inside the ground if you fancy a stretch of the legs. There's beer and fast food stalls galore as well as other activities going on around the ground.

The absolute highlight of the day however has to be the mascot race with David 'Bumble' Lloyd running round the assault course commentanting as mayhem ensues. There are still tickets left, so it's not too late to get in there! I'll be there, and if the sun comes out to play as well, It should turn out to be one heck of a day! Coverage on the Box starts at 10.30am on Sky Sports 1.

New North Face For Autumn/Winter 2011

Following up from a North Face post a couple of weeks ago, yesterday saw yet another lovely delivery of their finest Autumn/Winter 2011 gear. So we've got a few new products to showcase this morning!
First up we've got the North Face Women's Nashira Mossbud Full Zip Hoodie. As soon as you see the word 'Mossbud' come up, you know your going to be getting a high loft, soft to the touch and very, very snug garment! It has sun protection UPF 15, giving a good shield from the suns harmful rays. A neckline drawcord on the hood allows the hood to be drawn in, giving added protection against the wind and rain. The Nashira has two hand pockets, ideal for storing smaller accessories in. We've got 9 colours due in to us; Gravity Purple, TNF Black, Moonlight Ivory, Weimaraner Brown, Squid Red Heather, Fusion Pink, Fissure Green, Acoustic Blue, Brunette Brown. So there's plenty of choice to be had!

Next up we've got the Men's Campeche Full Zip Fleece, another new one for 2011. The Campeche uses the tried, test and much loved Polartec Classic 200, which offers a great amount of warmth for the Winter months. The Campeche features a full stretch zippered chest pocket, offering an ideal place to store things like maps and other documentation.

For a customized fit the fleece has a hem drawcord and neckline drawcord. The Campeche comes with two hand pockets, where you can keep all your smaller essentials in, whether it be your mobile phone or some Haribo to help keep your energy levels up!

The Powers Of An Outdoor Superhero!

We havn't done this on purpose, but after going through a few of our new North Face products it seems as though we're putting together some sort of Outdoorkit costume. Both the Men's Resolve Insulated Jacket and Rocket Beanie come in very 'Outdoorkity' colours. All we need now is some blue and orange trousers and a cape and we've got our very own Outdoorkit superhero outfit!

Not entirely sure what kind of super powers Outdoorkitman would posses, waterproofness seems thoroughly underwhelming when anyone can go out and buy their own jacket that can repel the rain. Maybe being able to predict the weather to save campers from a soggy getaway would be useful? But I guess that's what the Met Office is for, depending on how much you trust their forecast's that is.

We've had a few suggestions from the guys in the office. Craig's suggests the power of endurance, so no matter how long the hike, how high the mountain or how tough the climb, Outdoorkitman would just keep on going, just like the adverts for a very well known battery. Katie suggested Inspector Gadget like powers. "Go, go walking poles!" and low and behold out shoots two nordic walking poles from his arms. Or maybe internal navigation as suggested by John, the ability to always know exactly where you are and where your headed without needing a compass.

The idea of being constantly insulated would go down a treat in the Winter as well, but by the time Summer comes along you might end up being a liiittle bit sticky. Perhaps we've over thought this a tad, but when Mr Spielberg or Bruckheimer come calling for their next big flick, Outdoorkitman will be ready and waiting!

Kayak The Danube Completed!

The guys at Kayak the Danube have now completed their epic journey! They arrived at the end of their trek at the Black Sea on 13th August. They've Kayaked around 2850km in all, so it really is a monumental achievement!

Their hard work has all been in aid of the Sheffield 's Children Hospital, who provide dedicated health care for children and young people as well as acute and specialist services.

The guys have gone through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, that's some way!

They've also kept a blog throughout their adventures, detailing the entire trip, well worth a read! Plus there's some fantastic Video Blogs to check out on their Kayak The Danube YouTube site.

Ride2 Rescue hit the Middle East!

The guys at Ride2Rescue are now well over 3 months into there mamoth journey, which will take them 25,000km across Europe, The Middle East and all the way out the other end to Australia. The organisation has been set up expose and highlight the reality of child trafficking across the world.

They started off their trip from Ashford and have so far cycled through Belgium, France, Germany, Slovakia, Budapest, Romania, Turkey and now the Middle East begins!

There's been bumps and bruises, strong winds, broken camera's, samplings of local cuisine's and plenty of meeting new faces along the way.

The guys have now arrived in Iran and a ready and rearing to start the next section of their ride. It's well worth having a gander at their travel diaries, they give a really detailed insight into their journey as a whole, the places they stay and the people they meet!

The Icemen Project 2011

Big shout out goes to our Montane rep, Pete Sissons and Paul Cosgrove who have now set off on their challenge to circumnavigate Iceland in 14 days. That equates to 1600 miles on the bike and represents quite a challenge!

The ride is all in aid of Alopecia, an auto imune condition which in extreme cases causes hair loss. The charity 'BeBold Alopecia Awareness' hold an annual summer camp for children and adults with the condition to help build their confidence and self esteem. Pete and Paul are trying to raise enough money to secure the future of the camp over the coming years. It's the Icemen Project 2011 and you can read everything about it on their website and you can donate their too.

Something For The Weekend #8

Wednesday doesn't half come round quickly! Now, I realise the Football seasons kicked off and quite a few of people's weekends will be filled up travelling the length and breadth of the country watching their team lose to an agonizing 89th minute winner. (Or in Luton's case last night, agonizingly drawing 1-1 with Forest Green). But perhaps one particular game this weekend is just a little too far to get to? Or perhaps the pies are just too expensive to justify the trip? If your in that position like many others, we might have something for you!

First up we've got an absolutely fantastic walk for you. Cheddar Gorge. Featured in this months Country Walking, get set for breathtaking views and a cheeky slice of delicious cheese. It's been given a 'moderate' rating and features clear and easy paths plus a few challenging ascents.

Cheddar Gorge is a Limestone gorge situated in the Mendip Hills, Somerset. It's got a near vertical cliff face at the north end and lush steep grassy slopes to the south. The Gorge is a hub of activity with climbing walls, caves to explore and of course ample walking routes.

Also well worth a visit is the Cheddar Man Museum of Prehistory, which was inspired by the discovery of ancient hominids in the area. The Musuem contains information about the caves palaeontological development plus theres exhibits including original flint tools and human remains found in the cave, so you can grab some info and then go and explore the Gorge further!

This ones geared more towards the kids, but if your an adult you can still brush up on your knowledge of the Norman Conquest!

Or you can get everyone in and purchase a family ticket for £11.20. Those prices include entry to all the events and the Castle Grounds, so you can roam around and explore.

The Castle itself was built some time between 1066 and 1086, where it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. So theres no better place to sample Norman history!

Climbing Kilimanjaro: Part 2

As promised yesterday, here's the second part of Elizabeth's climb up Kilimanjaro in aid of Childreach International.

We reconvene as she reaches Baranco Camp and goes onwards to the summit!

DAY 4: Today begins early with an intensive scrambling exercise up Baranco Wall. Following the sheer 700ft ascent, we continue on towards Karanga Valley and Barafu Hut. We arrive at camp early for an early dinner, and go to sleep for a couple of hours to be woken at 10:30pm in preparation for the final ascent. Before midnight we begin the steep and enduring climb through the darkness; as the temperature drops to around -20c, many people began to hallucinate and the group falls apart. One member is reported to have caught hypothermia, while another has been taken back due to severe altitude sickness. I myself become separated from the group, feeling disorientated and confused with exhaustion. Just then, a porter rescues me from my state of miserable despair and offers to carry my rucksack as I follow his guiding footsteps. Gradually pressing on with him, slow and steady, I begin to realise the harsh severity of this austere mountain – and, perhaps for the first time, to respect the great consequence of its challenge.

(Much needed hydration!)

DAY 5: By sunrise my porter and I have reached the initial peak, Stella Point. I myself have little sensible recollection of how I got there – and to my greater surprise, I am one of the first. A small handful of us congregate here, from which point a further 1 hour traverse leads us round to the absolute summit of Uhuru Peak at 5895m. It is an incredible feeling to have reached the top with so many of us reunited on the “Roof of Africa” and celebrating together in the radiant sunshine, especially given the dark and lonely preceding hours when this had seemed near impossible. Following an easy, cheerful descent to our previous campsite at Barafu Hut, we continue along to spend our final night camping at Mweka Hut.

DAY 6: After a leisurely breakfast we pack up our things and begin the 3 hour descent to Mweka Gate, the terminus of our epic journey. Today is by far the shortest and easiest day of trekking and everyone’s spirits are high – jubilant, even! Those members of the group who hadn’t managed to summit are still with us, themselves caught up in the spirit of relief and celebration. It has been an inimitable experience for all involved, and I will never forget those strange and wonderful days on Kilimanjaro. Nor will I ever forget the tough work of the heroic porters, without whose help none of us could have made it alive, and to whom I say (in layman’s Swahili): “Asante, asante sana!”

Climbing Kilimanjaro: Part 1

Earlier this year we donated some gear to Elizabeth Gourd for her Kilimanjaro Climb in aid of Childreach International. We're delighted to report that after much hard work and perseverance she summited the Tanzanian Mountain in July just gone! It really is a fantastic cause too, Childreach International works with local communities in the developing world to help improve children's access to healthcare, education, child rights and protection. So far they've worked with over 70,000 children in over 7 countries and are still striving to promote positive change through local communites.

Elizabeth also took some absolutely stunning photographs and kept a diary throughout her ascent, giving some fantastic insights into what it takes to conquer the mountain.

Here's Part One of her Kilimanjaro Diary:

DAY 1: 10:00 a.m. Machame Gate: upon arrival we are required to log our names and full details before we can begin climbing the Machame Route. It is the most scenic route up Kilimanjaro, we are told, but also the steepest and most difficult. Our guide calls it the “Whiskey route” – as opposed to the “Coca Cola route”, he explains – and I presume this means it is also the most dangerous. There are lots of serious warnings at the gate regarding general health and fitness ability; if ever a mountain needed a disclaimer, this would be it. Everyone begins walking too quickly at first, but we soon adjust as a group and steady ourselves to a better pace. The porters are incredible: they leap and bound ahead of us all, carrying tables and chairs and food supplies, not to mention our rucksacks. We spend 7 hours trekking through mud and rain and rainforest until we reach our camp at Machame Hut. Thankfully, there is to be no more cloud cover above the rainforest line.

DAY 2: The second day begins with the promise that it will be shorter – if steeper – than Day One. Gradually ascending the Machame Ridge line, we find ourselves in a very different terrain; above the rainforest is all heath and moorlands, which exposes a dramatic view of the wider landscape. Behind us, an incredible cover of dense rainforest stretches out and already it looks as though we’ve been climbing for days. Ahead, we catch our first glimpse of the icy summit as it emerges hazy and inaccessible in the distance. By the time we reach Shira camp in the early afternoon, several members of the group began to experience the first onset of altitude sickness: symptoms include headaches, dizziness and nausea. I feel somewhat ill myself from loss of appetite but resolve to sleep it off.

DAY 3: Everyone feeling rough, we start the day in grim anticipation that it could be make or break for many people in the group. One of the group leaders had suffered terrible altitude sickness in his first attempt to climb Kilimanjaro a year previous, so we all look to him for signs of worsening illness. After a gradual and painstaking 4 hour ascent through the stark alpine desert, we reach Lava Tower at 4,500m for acclimatisation purposes, and then descend a further 4 hours to Baranco Camp. Several more people are now feeling the effects of altitude sickness and group morale is quite depressed. However, from here we can see the snows of Kilimanjaro towering dominant above the campsite. For me (at least) this sudden, dramatic proximity is encouraging – not much further now!

Mountain Equipment for Autumn/Winter 2011

Continuing to prepare ourselves for the Autumn/Winter 2011 season, we received a substantial Mountain Equipment delivery last week. We've got in everything you'd need, from cosy down jackets and mountaineering waterproofs to grip gloves and sporty fleeces, our Mountain Equipment range suits all weathers!

Here's a little rundown of what we've got in...

First up is the Mountain Equipment Trident Jacket. A technical, midweight fleece that packs plenty of versatility. The Trident uses ME's own EXOlite II technology, providing you with the perfect balance of insulation and wind resistance, so those blowy days won't be getting the best of you! It comes with all the mod cons; Mountain helmet compatible hood, 2 hand pockets, offset chest pocket and adjustable cuffs.

The Jorasses Zip Tee is a colourful, lightweight addition to this years range. It's been made with our friend Polartec Classic for warmth and next to skin comfort. It's been given an active cut and pre-shaped sleeves to make it ideal for mountain use (well it's all in the name really!). Again, like the Trident, next to skin comfort is guranteed with the use of flatlocked stitching throughout. It comes with a single napoleon chest pocket and lycra bound cuffs.

On to gloves now, or more specifically the Mountain Equipment Touch Grip Glove. Like it's brother the Touch Glove it's been made with Polartec Power Stretch, has an extended double layer cuff and a box finger construction for a secure and close fit. The Touch Grip however also comes with a Silicone print palm for extra grip, especially useful for when using walking poles and ice axes.

Sneak Preview: The Osprey Karve and Kode Rucksacks

New to Osprey's range this season and expected in at Outdoorkit very soon are the Karve and Kode rucksacks.

The Karve series offers sleek and stylish practically for riders seeking adventure. They've been made to be low profiled for a comfortable and dynamic ride. Of course it doesn't have to be used soley for biking, you'll feel the benefits when using them for any high octane activities.

Sneak Preview #29: The Berghaus Velum Jacket

Yorkshire Dales Walking Festival Proves To Be A Roaring Success

Walkers from across Yorkshire and Lancashire are coming together to participate in the inaugural Yorkshire Dales Walking Festiva l. It's all going to be kicking off from Settle and the surrounding dales.

The festival is the latest addition to the events calendar of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal which so far has raised over £2.6million for children's and cancer charities.

More than 2,200 places have been sold for the walking festival itself with the event now being confirmed as officially sold out.

Even Northern Rail are helping out by laying on specialist trains for participants going to and from Settle, with proceeds being donated to the appeal. It might be a sell out, but you can still get involved. Organisers are looking for volunteers to assist them at checkpoints along the course and at the start and finish.

Something For The Weekend #7

Yes, It's that time of the week again! If your stuck for ideas with what to do with yourselves this weekend, take heart from the fact that wherever you may be theres ALWAYS something to check out! This weeks blog is no different, so here's a few little thought's...

Skiddaw in the Lake District. If your on the lookout for a pleasant ascent then England's fourth highest mountain may be just for you. It's regarded as one of the simplest Lake District mountain's to climb, mainly because it features well laid out tourist tracks, so it's ideal for the occasional walker. September's issue of Trail Magazine maps out a lovely 12 mile walk, starting off from Keswick, striding up Skiddaw, onwards over Lonscale Fell and back full circle to Keswick where you can relax with a well earned cuppa.

This route also provides some stunning views back over Keswick and Derwentwater (although when your in the Lakes, you'll find yourself hard pressed not to encounter stunning views). You can't go wrong with Wainwright, he comments "The Summit is buttressed magnificently by a circle of lesser heights, all of them members of the proud Skiddaw family, the whole forming a splendid and complete example of the structure of the mountains, especially well seen from all directions because of it's isolation."

The mountain takes it's name from the surrounding 'Skiddaw Forest' and to the isolated 'Skiddaw House', a former shooting lodge turned youth hostel.

Avid reader's ahoy, there be book fair's on the horizon! The book fair's in question (with no pirate's involved I have to add) are run by the Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association or PBFA for short. They've been going strong since 1974 and now bring their fairs all over the UK. More than 30 booksellers will be offering antiquarian and second hand books this weekend in Bakewell.

If you fancy getting down there and having a nosey around, the fairs taking place at the Bakewell Agricultural Centre on Haddon Road. Admissions only £1 and you'll be able to get your hands on some intriguing texts from 10am til 4pm.

Review: The North Face Women's La Paz Jacket

The last couple of weeks have seen our first Autumn/Winter drops from The North Face, and two rather large drops they were! We know it's still August and the majority of people are still getting the most out of their Summer wear, but at the same time, there's never any harm in planning ahead for the Winter chill! With that in mind we've now got the Metropolis Parka in stock, the Arctic Parka, the new Nuptse 2 ranges and much much more!

We've also had The North Face Women's La Paz Jacket swing by, so I thought I'd give it a closer look! The La Paz is new for this season and offers stylish warmth in a lightweight package. It has a 600 Goose Down fill, so it's packing plenty of insulation, but still manages to maintain a sleek and slender look, so you won't be looking like the Michelin Man.

It's been designed primarily as a mid layer piece, so you can stick a baselayer underneath and a shell on top for extra protection. But in truth it can be worn whatever the weather and whatever the circumstance, whether it's just for around town use or walking the dog, the La Paz has plenty of versatility.

Sneak Preview #28: The Ronhill Vizion Range

Coming soon this Autumn/Winter 2011 is Ronhill's Vizion range of clothing. It's the must have Hi-Viz range for any runner!

Hi-Viz clothing is crucial to runners, especially during the Autumn/Winter seasons when the need and desire for runners to wear clothing that maximises their ability to stand out and be seen is even more prevalant. Here's a little sneaky peak of a couple of the item's we're due in.

The Ronhill Vizion Windlite Jacket is a new Hi-Visibility Jacket with excellent wind resistance qualities. With runners in mind, it's extremely lightweight and breathable, making those runs in the evening that much more enjoyable. It's also L.E.D. compatible for extra visibility if needed.

Something For The Weekend #6

Ahh, what a scorcher this weeks been so far! Absolutely glorious! That is if your not sitting in an office hard at work at this particular moment in time. But to be fair, the sunshine usually lasts well into the evening, so you can pop home from work, stick your feet up on the garden furniture and relax, until next doors cat decides to leap onto your lap. Can't be just me surely?

Anyway, here's a few ideas to wet your appetite for the coming weekend!

First up, we all know and love them, yes that's right, we're celebrating 40 years of Mr Men! To mark the occasion, from 18 July - 11 September, Selfridges London has transformed it's gift shop to welcome all sorts of Mr Men paraphernalia and stationary! It promises plenty of fun and entertainment for all the family!

"Whether you feel a nostalgic fondness for the iconic series, or your little ones are fans of Roger Hargreaves’ books, the Ground Floor feature will include a fantastic range of products as well as entertainment and events for the whole family."

Sounds like it's most definitely worth checking out and theres plenty of time left to do so! I might even go down myself to add to my Mr. Tickle mug that sits proudly in the cupboard at home.

Second this week and much more in keeping with the weather, have a look at GoApe. It's essentially one massive treetop adventure! There's 27 courses dotted over the UK, so everyone can get involved! All the courses are located in lush, forested areas to ensure breathtaking scenary while you explore your inner Tarzan.

There's lots of variety to be had on the course too, theres tree-top high wires, tricky crossings with ladders, walkways bridges and tunnels. You get kitted out with all the harnesses, pulleys and karabiners you'll need and get a 30 minute safety briefing which probably consists of more than just saying "Watch out for that tree!"

The whole experience gets you outdoors in the fresh air and connected with your surroundings, if your an outdoors buff then it's definitely one to give a go!

Hi-Tec ion-mask technology

New in to Outdoorkit over the last week or so is the Hi-Tec V-Lite Altitude Ultra Luxe WPi Boot.

Now it might look like just another boot, but theres something rather special about this particular boot. It uses pioneering ion-mask hydrophobic technology. It's all frightfully clever! Here's how it works...

First of all the shoes are loaded into a special ion-mask machine, one pair per chamber. The waterproofing process then begins by removing air from the chamber to form a pressured vacuum. The machine then starts to generate a plasma to activate the surface of the shoes. This is then followed by the chamber being injected with fluro carbons which penetrates every fibre in the shoe. The finishing touches are then put on with a layer 10 nano-metres thick, which is 1000 times thinner than the human hair. And there you have it, a fully waterproof boot, without complicated layers of material!

A big shout out goes to Kirsty Medcalf who's jetting off to Canada to do research with OrcaLab. She's going to be living out in the wilderness, where she will no doubt experience some extremely cold conditions. So we thought we'd help her out a little by donating a Snugpak sleeping bag for her placement.

Kirsty has been studying at Plymouth University doing a BSC in Wildlife Conservation. OrcaLab isn't just any Wildlife Research organisation however, their philosophy is "research without interference". Which first of all means the wildlife that surrounds them can live their day to day lives without any obstructions from intrusive research, plus it also means results from the research will be that more accurate because of the lack of interference with the natural world.

Well this week has absolutely flown by, it only seems like yesterday I was urging you to take the plunge and go into the dark depths of the Williamson Tunnels in Liverpool. But it's a new week, which means it's time to embrace something new this weekend.

Starting off at a rather sleepy pace, why not check out the 'Explore Kent Walking Festival', as mentioned in the latest issue of Walk Magazine. The festival has set out to bring together walking groups from all across the country to create one big walking festival. The festival is on from 18th July - 7th August and theres at least three walks a day with varying lengths, themes and grades, so everyone is more than welcome. And if that hasn't convinced you, all walkers will receive a free goody bag with gifts and information, good stuff ey!

Here's all the walks currently going ahead, so theres no excuse not to get outdoors and enjoy what Kent has to offer!

Finishing at a rather more frenetic pace compared to a lovely amble through Kent, Iron Maiden are touring! And no, I'm not talking about the medieval torture device. Theres still tickets left, so whether your near Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff or London you can go and see quite possibly the biggest metal group on earth!

Forming in the mid 1970's the East Londoners havn't looked back since, unless you count their 'Somewhere Back In Time' Album. They've released 15 studio albums, each one with their own unique sound and some absolutely classic songs that have gone down in rock history. It's fairly hard to resist a home grown heavy metal band who's lead singer likes nothing more than to have the odd fencing joust and to fly across the world as an aeroplane pilot, Bruce Dickinson really is one of a kind and encapsulates the true meaning of English eccentricity.

If your not a fan I'm 95% sure you would have heard some of their tracks in passing, the opening drum beat and riff to 'Run To The Hills' is world renowned and I'm fairly sure it's featured in quite a few films, TV programmes and adverts. Plus if your a fan of Monty Python, the late great Graham Chapman featured in their video 'Can I Play With Madness'!
