After sending her on her way with an Osprey Rucksack, first aid kit and mosquito repellent she's now back in the UK, having done some fantastic work volunteering at a school on the Island of Ovalau.

Here's a bit about her trip on her own words...

"I arrived in January 2014, Osprey back pack filled
to the brim and ready to start 7 months volunteering at a school
on an outer island in Fiji. What an adventure it was! With no
running water we had our baths in the crystal clear river near
my home, which was a hut made from bamboo and dried leaves woven
together (very cool and breezy).

I lived in a village at the centre of a volcanic
crater, surrounded by mountains covered in jungle (not sand and
sea as the word Fiji often brings to the imagination). I had
such a great time teaching children in the week and exploring
the jungle on the weekends that I extended my stay from 7 months
to 11, returning in December 2014. My mosquito repellent came in
very handy! It is a must have for Fiji. My first aid kit was
also fab, any child with a cut? I’m there with my kit! My quick
dry towel is in my airing cupboard at home now, it lasted the
whole 11 months and I brought it back with me as I loved it so
much!

6 months on I am back in the swing of life here,
but me and my Osprey backpack have plans! I will be off
travelling early next year….

Sorry that I have taken such a long time to get back
to you guys with photos as I promised! But attached is a photo
of me at the top of Koro Levu, the mountain behind my village of
Lovoni. From this point you can see down to my village, and
around the whole island of Ovalau. After I took the photo I tied
the t-shirt to a tree, so OutdoorKit's name would be up there
forever."

Well done again Abbey! Wishing you and your Osprey Pack a safe journey, wherever you jet off to next year! :-)

It's been yonks since our last post, and yonks and yonks since our last Sneak Preview! So, with Christmas out of the way, New Years done and dusted, it's time to sink our teeth into some new exciting gear. 'New' and 'exciting' being the operative words for this new jacket we're about to check out...

Brand spanking new for Spring/Summer 2015, we have the Rab Men's Flashpoint Jacket. A splendidly super-light-weight shell jacket, the Flashpoint utilizes a unique and exclusive technology, 'Flashpoint'. It could quite possibly be the lightest 3 layer fabric on the market and enables the ultimate balance of performance, weight and protection. We can't wait to try it!

The jacket itself has minimal seams and micro seam tape, cutting down on weight and any possible abrasion or chafing points. It comes with a helmet compatible hood with a lightweight flexible peak for extra protection against the elements. Like the majority of jackets these days, the Flashpoint features a YKK vislon aquaguard front zip, along with a YKK water resistant zipped napoleon chest pocket, always a handy feature for stuffing away maps and other documents.

Adjustment wise the Flashpoint features micro velcro cuffs and a half hem drawcord. You also get a lightweight stuff sack in the deal too. Like a lot of Rab's gear, the fit is slightly slimmer, harking towards a more active user, so I may be having to run off the remainder of those mince pies if I fancy purchasing one myself.

The Rab Men's Flashpoint Jacket RRP's at £200 and will be coming in two colours; 'Zinc' and a brighter 'Kol' as shown in the photo's.

With Hurricane Gonzalo sweeping over the British Isles today (although just as I've typed this the sun has come out) we thought we'd take a look at one impressive jacket in particular.

The Men's & Women's Marmot PreCip Jacket. On the outside it looks like just a regular run of the mill waterproof jacket, but on closer inspection, there's a lot more going on than first meets the eye. The PreCip series uses Marmot's 'NanoPro' technology. The NanoPro microporous coating utilizes a new pore structure that is 30% smaller than it's previous generations. These smaller pores allow for enhanced breathability (43% more breathable compared to the previous technology) whilst still maintaining it's excellent waterproofness, bringing a new level of performance without having to break the bank. In fact the PreCip jacket RRP's at only £85 and cost's £76.49 once you've got our 10% off!

Getting down to the nitty gritty of the jackets specifications, it's been made with a 100% nylon ripstop fabric and has been 100% seam taped, offering plenty of durability and protection. The PreCip comes with a attached adjustable hood that can be easily folded away and rolled into the collar. It also features a 'DriClime' lined chin guard for extra comfort & wicking so there's non of that annoying chafe when the zip has been done all the way up.

The jacket also comes with Pit zips for extra breathability when needed and 'Angel-wing' movement stops the hem from riding up. You won't be needing an additional stuff sack with the PreCip either as it handily packs away into it's own pocket, allowing you to shove it away into your pack when not in use. For a comfortable, personalised fit the jacket also features velcro adjustable cuffs and an elasticated drawcord hem. This all weighs in at a mere 311g!

We've currently got the PreCip available in an array of eclectic colours, including the Sierra Blue and Team Red colourways as shown above. Essentially, if it's a lightweight, high performing waterproof at an affordable price you're looking for, then the Marmot PreCip Jacket is definitely one to try!
New arrivals, oh how we love new arrivals! One particular new arrival (how many times can we say 'new arrival' in the opening paragraph?) dropped in with us at the back end of last week and it goes by the name of Healthy Back Bag!

You may just think "oh it's just another pack brand", but Healthy Back Bag's come with a genuine point of difference and it's all in the name! The majority of shoulder style bags, although stylish, can also be absolutely murder for your back, hanging loose and not actually fitting to your form. That's where Healthy Back Bag's come in. Essentially the more places a pack touches your body, the more comfortable and lighter it will feel. The aforementioned produce bags that mould to the contours of your spine, distributing weight evenly, meaning no pulling, no straining and no aching neck and shoulders after use. As well as being uber healthy, they also construct bags intelligently with clever pockets, inside and out, ensuring your stuff is also neatly organised and easily accessible! Rummaging around your bag or pack and finding everything apart from the actual thing you were looking for is never much fun!
Healthy Back Bags summarize the popularity of they're packs with a three-fold answer...

1) The Healthy Back Bag is unique; in its shape, in its intelligent pocketing, in its extraordinary variety.

2) Their customers are loyal, coming back time after time to add to their HBB collection.

3) Every Healthy Back Bag is amazingly comfortable, combining in equal measure, versatility, practicality and style.
But it's not about words, you can check out the range yourself HERE!Outdoorkithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03512569532590965138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3372497886929346529.post-60490912515245809542014-10-08T15:08:00.002+01:002014-10-08T15:11:14.745+01:00Autumn DaysIt feels a bit more like Autumn should do now doesn't it? There's been a sense of incongruity about the last month or so, talk of heatwaves, 15ºC plus during the day, thermostats being left well alone. But breaking into the second week of October, it seems normality has been restored. That brisk chill that greets you in the morning, the 'winter duvet' being pulled from the loft and then that's that all too familiar sound of the central heating clunking into life.

But it's all part of welcoming in the Autumn/Winter. As too is preparing yourself for your outdoor pursuits in these impending conditions. I'm a runner myself and I don't know about everyone else but I find running in the cold (and wet) quite cathartic at times, there's something rather cleansing and free about being soaked to the bone while pounding the pavement and roads. The same goes with running in the cold, wrapping yourself up in a cocoon of hats, gloves and windproof clothing while still having palpable sense of the temperature outside around you. Of course arriving back home to be greeted by a piping hot shower and deserved mug of tea helps you push through it all, making it all completely worth it at the end. Gear wise when it comes to my runs, I'm pretty much Montane through and through, I'd be lost without my Featherlite Smock and Logo Beanie around this time of year!

One thing that has been engrained in my head year after year from my school days is the 'Autumn Days' hymn. Whenever we hit September/October or at the mere mention of Autumn my brain immediately wants to belt the song out. Although it hasn't been until very recently that I've started to question one particular line in the song, which goes back to that incongruity I mentioned above. "Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled, and the silk inside a chestnut shell, jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled, all these things I love so well". Now I don't know about you, but when I think of Autumn, 'jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled', isn't something that jumps out at me at being immediately autumnal, but it fits nicely, so we'll let the lyricists of on that one!

Coming back closer to home, our Autumn/Winter Range is now pretty much fully in stock! Baring a few additions we'll see arrive in the next couple of weeks or so, we're all set for the chill!

And if you havn't heard 'Autumn Days', here's the lyrics in full...

Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk inside a chestnut shell
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well
So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.
Clouds that look like familiar faces
And a winter’s moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the song the milkman sings.
So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.
Whipped-up spray that is rainbow-scattered
And a swallow curving in the sky
Shoes so comfy though they’re worn out and they’re battered
And the taste of apple pie.
So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.
Scent of gardens when the rain’s been falling
And a minnow darting down a stream
Picked-up engine that’s been stuttering and stalling
And a win for my home team.
So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.

A rather merry tune if ever there was one! But carefully, Youtube this at your peril, you'll never be able to rid your brain of it! Outdoorkithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03512569532590965138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3372497886929346529.post-74844691770839699182014-10-03T16:00:00.000+01:002014-10-03T16:00:13.081+01:00Bestsellers - September's Top ThreeAt the start of every month we always have a glance back to see what everyone's been majorly loving and the stats for September are now in!

In at Number 1, we have the Tilley LTM6 Lighterweight Airflo Hat. The LTM6 being at no.1 isn't all that surprising, it may now be Autumn, but it's still been rather mild, so a bit of coverage from the sun has still been needed. Couple that together with the fact the LTM6 is a bloomin' good hat and one of the best around, it well and truly deserves it's perch at number one best seller for the month!

Rolling in at Number 2, is the Lowe Alpine TT Carry On 40. It really did fly off the shelves in September, so much so we've now completely sold out! But never fear, we shall most definitely be ordering more to be in stock soon. If you're going away traveling or just want something that's going to fit on with ease as hand luggage on the majority of airlines, the TT Carry-On is well worth a look!

And to round it off, in at number 3 is The North Face Men's Nuptse 2 Vest. Even though we've seen a milder start to Autumn, the Nuptse Vest continues to go strongly, it's had a cracking 50% off, making it a bit of a steal if your still looking for a body warmer to head into the winter with!Outdoorkithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03512569532590965138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3372497886929346529.post-329940716287663802014-09-16T10:07:00.002+01:002014-09-16T14:17:23.944+01:00Two Winter Favourites: The North Face McMurdo and Arctic Parka'sWe've now reached the heady heights of September, which means it's time to start welcoming in our Autumn and Winter ranges! On the outside of the pack there's reflective safety piping and screen print, always good when the light levels start to fade. Mesh side pockets also provide handy stash room for things you need to close to hand and side carry handles give an extra option to hold.
A few weeks back we had a look at what Montane had to offer for Autumn/Winter, today I thought we'd have a little gander at what to expect from Marmot for AW14!

Brand new for us here at Outdoorkit, let's say hello to the Marmot Men's Calen Hoody. It's one from Marmot's insulated range and utilises Primaloft synthetic insulation. PrimaLoft is incredibly soft, lightweight, breathable and comes with excellent
water repellency so you remain dry, warm and comfortable even under the
most extreme conditions. So it excels in the British climate!

The Calen features a lightweight attached hood giving you extra weather protection and that 'hoodie' aesthetic for casual around town use. It has spaciously sized zippered hand warmer pockets and a zippered chest pocket, so there's plenty of room to store all those essentials in whilst on the move. An interior zip pocket and interior mesh storage pocket provide extra security for more valuable accessories.

The inner of the hoody features a DriClime lined collar, a bi-component denier gradient dimensional knit made of two different
denier yarns. Using extremely fine deniers this technology is extremely light
with superior wicking performance, keeping you nice and cool when the pace picks up.

Moving down a tad, the hoody's elastic bound cuffs ensure a snuggish fit around your arms to keep the heat in and the cold breeze out. There's also an elastic drawcord hem for an adjustable fit and 'Angel Wing Movement' for all round dexterity throughout the arms.

When it arrives in with us the Calen Hoody will cost around £108 of your finest British pounds and weighs in at about 640g, so pretty lightweight too.

We've got 4 colours due in; Blue Sapphire, Brown Moss, Black and Steel. Keep an eye out for it from September and onwards!
She had moved up a category, switching from top to lead climbing and beat all the 11-13 year olds in her group (three of which were in the British team) making her fear even more impressive!

It went down to a super final where Emily brought the top spot home and received fantastic support as she did so, as you can see and hear from the video of her climb below. Trying hard to not be outdone, her brother Oscar also finished in 3rd place in his age group, the Phillips family are not to be messed with when it comes to climbing!
Friday night was spent wondering around and watching the sun go down at Batford Springs in Harpenden. A place I didn't even know existed!

Although relatively small, the area has a lovely green park and at the far end of it you have the meandering River Lea, which starts in Leagrave, Luton and carries on until it meets with the Thames.

It's all very tranquil, plenty of trees and wildlife, we were even lucky enough to spot a Heron making it's exit from the reeds into the river. There's also a bridged footpath where you can dangle your feet below and watch the scores of fish dash about underneath you.

We'd timed our visit perfectly, the light was starting to fade, outside noise was at a hush and all you could hear were the birds in the trees and the soothing sound of flowing water from the river. Well worth a visit if you're around and about the Beds, Herts and Bucks area!Outdoorkithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03512569532590965138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3372497886929346529.post-37599093509101178092014-06-24T12:25:00.000+01:002014-06-26T11:21:46.618+01:008 Ways to Get the Kids Outdoors

Getting the kid's away from their computer screens and into the outdoors can be a toughie these days. With console's galore and smartphone's to play with it can be hard to convince your little tyke's that the outdoors is something embrace and enjoy. I was having a read of TGO Magazine yesterday and came across these great ideas to get the family involved.

1/ Distraction. It's genuinely possible to head into the hills without complaints and hardly any stops. Try playing games like i-spy all the way to the top or breaking up the route with mini geography lessons about the surrounding area.

2/ Digestion. Keeping bloody sugar levels high is vital. Ensuring you have plenty of food and water for the walk keeps motivations up, especially with sweet things acting as a great reward for good progress.

3/ Direction. Try giving them the map to read and don't be afraid to go the wrong way, it will empower them and teach them.

4/ Distance. Start small and slowly go longer distances. Never lie about how far you have left to go as it's more likely to annoy and break the trust of your littlun.

5/ Difficulty. Rather than going on a very long walk, try a shorter but more complicated route. Walking up streams and jumping between rocks are ideal.

6/ Discipline. Limit your children's time on their electronics, make it a privilege.

7/ Stay positive. If you're enjoying yourself, chances are, they will be too. If you complain and are unhappy, the kid's will probably follow suit.

8/ Objective. Have an agreed objective if possible and have other little objectives along the way to make the journey exciting, think of things you can find or do along your route.

It's also well worth checking out the website missionexplore.net for plenty more ideas!Outdoorkithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03512569532590965138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3372497886929346529.post-62345758553795757682014-06-23T10:44:00.000+01:002014-06-23T15:13:20.404+01:00Wimbledon 2014 - New Chalk Balls PleaseSports fans rejoice! We now have the World Cup to enjoy as well as Wimbledon 2014! Nearly a year on from Andy Murray lifting the title, can he duplicate the same feat all over again? There's a case to be argued that he goes into the tournament with even more pressure on his shoulders than last time out. With England being condemned to an early exit by Costa Rica beating the Italians (but mostly by themselves) he might well be carrying the hopes and dreams of British silverware this Summer! And with new coach Amelie Mauresmo, who knows what he could achieve.

All the hubbub around Wimbledon got us thinking. What if you fancied a game of tennis but didn't have the correct apparel, but you DID have access to some outdoor gear. What could you use to set up a tennis match? We we're thinking maybe a mosquito net along with an ice shovel for racket replacements and a chalk ball as the tennis ball replacement, what do you think?

Heading into the heady heights of June, it's prime Holiday booking/browsing time and that's when travel bags and wheeled luggage come into their own. We've had Dakine in for a couple of months now and our stock control manager, Ian, has dipped his toes into the lake of Dakine and purchased himself a Carry On Roller 36L Travel Bag, and suffice to say, he's loving it.

An ideal choice for shorter stays and quick getaways, the Carry On Roller has 36 Litres to it's name, ample room for clothes and accessories. It's been made with a 600 denier polyester fabric, giving it plenty of durability, to withstand even the heavy handed of luggage handlers at the airport. It's retractable handle extends to allow you to glide it effortlessly behind you through the airport and then can be retracted away ready for overhead luggage compartments or storage. The Carry On features durable and slick replaceable urethane wheels.

Space wise, although deceptively small, the bag, as described by Ian, has a "cavernous" amount of room in the main compartment and ample room in the exterior organizer pockets, with enough room in the front pocket to fit in an extra pair of shoes or sandals.

Specification wise, the Dakine Carry On Roller 36L Bag weighs in at 2.200kg and measures up at 54 x 33 x 26cm. It's always recommended however to check the latest luggage allowance regulations with your airline prior to traveling. Ian has very much joined the Dakine bandwagon, so much so he's now looking to buy a matching Dakine washbag for his travels!
The European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) is has
announced that both Osprey Europe and Pacsafe have each committed to
sponsor a conservation project through EOCA, and so become Summit
Members. Pacsafe, whose logo incorporates a turtle, has committed $20,000 to a
project that will address the threats to the Leatherback, Green and
Hawksbill turtles on the remote Pacuare beach in Costa Rica. Measures
will include habitat restoration, beach patrols, an egg hatchery and
education.

Osprey Europe, leaders in innovative backpacks, have committed €28,800
to support Bird Conservation Georgia’s project to address the threat of
hunting to over one million raptors which migrate through the foothills
of the Lesser Caucasus in Georgia each migration season. This innovative
project aims to make it easier to access and enjoy the spectacle of the
birds’ migration, and support and educate local people in how to
promote bird watching and eco-tourism as an alternative to hunting.

Catherine Savidge, Joint General Manager of EOCA said “We are delighted
that Pacsafe and Osprey Europe have both decided to sponsor a project
through the Association. We get many requests for funding of vitally
important conservation projects each year and it is very rewarding to be
able to match worthwhile projects with forward- thinking companies
committed to putting something back into outdoor environments. We are
proud to reward their tremendous commitments and contributions with
Summit Membership status of EOCA.”Outdoorkithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03512569532590965138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3372497886929346529.post-38942682198221983042014-06-17T11:18:00.001+01:002014-06-23T15:12:03.643+01:00AW14 Sneak Preview #4: Montane Men's Minimus Hybrid Jacket

There's been a little bit of a hiatus between Sneak Preview posts, so we thought it's damn well about time we brought another one your way! We've been rather busy in the office over the past month or so, updating our systems ready for the Autumn/Winter, a tad early yes, but it saves rushing around like a bunch of loonies when September and October comes around! So we've seen first hand all the shiny new gear we'll have arriving in next season, and without further ado, here's one of them from Montane...

Brand spanking new for AW14, we've got the Montane Men's Minimus Hybrid Jacket. We've had the Minimus smock, pant, jacket and mountain jacket and now it's time to Hybrid things up! With the Minimus Hybrid you're getting the best of both worlds. The outer fabric has been made using Pertex Shield, ensuring waterproof and breathability protection. Inside, the jacket has 60g of Primaloft Silver Eco Insulation, which uses post-consumer recycled material to create a high loft, thermally efficient, earth-friendly insulation. So you can stay toasty warm without having to worry about your carbon footprint! All the seams have been micro taped, increasing breathable surface area, for optimum venting.

The jacket has been constructed with articulated arms with engineered tailoring to prevent seams constricting over elbows and biceps, always handy, especially if your a climber and you don't want the jacket to keep riding up. Also featured is a fully adjustable climbing helmet compatible hood with three points of adjustment, for that extra personalised fit. The hood visor has been stiffened with a wire on the lip as well for adjustability and added protection. There's also a rear hood compression drawcord which allows the hood to be rolled down and stowed away whilst not in use.

Space wise, the Minimus Hybrid comes with two deep A-line hand warmer pockets with YKK reversed coil zips and storm flap protection plus a left arm sleeve pocket with YKK matte AquaGuard zip. The jacket's full length YKK AquaGuard front zip is highly water resistant and two way to allow easy access to a climbing or rucksack harness. For extra weather protection the jacket also features an internal storm flap with rain drain edge behind the centre front zip.

Highlighting the jacket's breathability and wicking abilities, it comes with two angled core body vents under arms and the upper back with YKK zips which allow venting whilst working hard with a heavy pack. Moving down the sleeves, the jacket has shaped cuffs with adjustable velcro tabs for ease of use with gloves or mitts. Having decently sized, ergonomic and accessible adjustment points are always a bonus, especially when it's freezing cold out and you don't want to have to take your gloves off to re-adjust your fit while out and about.

The Montane Minimus Hybrid RRP's at £240, but will cost around £215.99 when it arrives in stock with us. We've got two colours due in; Electric Blue/Burnt Orange and Black/Kiwi Lining.

With the likes of Reading, Download and Glastonbury just around the corner, when it comes to getting the best festival experience possible and coming away in one piece, some of these little tips may just come in rather handy!

1) Choose a
bigger tent than you need. Yes it's mostly about the music and taking in the day to day hubbub of festival life, but setting up camp can be just as important when it comes to enjoying your festival experience. Always try go 1 bigger as a minimum, after all you can never
have enough room and it means you fit in the mountain of stuff you bring along with you!6) Camp on high ground. If the heavens open, tent flooding can be a nightmare, your comfy nights sleep disappears and all your gear gets sodden.

7) Get yourself a seat. If the grounds soggy and muddy you'll need somewhere comfy and dry to sit at camp.

8) Take wet wipes. They keep you clean if your feeling lazy and can't face the
freezing showers. Antibacterial hand gel is also a solid option.

9) Bring ear plugs. This one can work twofold, firstly for getting a good nights sleep if you have noisy neighbours. Secondly if your worried about damaging your ears and getting the dreaded ringing for days, take a pair of protective sound plugs.

10) Don't camp next to a path if you can help it. Because you'll hear every tom, dick and harry as they walk up and down, especially distracting when your snuggled up in your sleeping bag trying to get some much needed kip!
The Kastelli features stretch two tone grid backer panels, aiding overall breathability and dexterity. Two sizable front hand pockets provide plenty of room to store essentials or documents in, as well as your hands if it gets a tad nippy out. One chest pocket also allows you to store more important items closer to your person, you know...like maps and haribo. There's also elastic binding at the cuffs and hood, for a fitted feel and sleek aesthetics. Down at the bottom you've got a shock chord hem with hidden adjustment inside the pockets, which again cleans up the look of the jacket and allows you to adjust while keeping your hands toasty! (If you've forgotten your gloves of course).
It's been four days since myself, Ian, John and Katie from the office took on the behemoth that is and was IronRun. We'd all put in a decent amount of training over the last few months, some more than others I have to admit. But by the time Saturday came around we all felt ready and excited for the challenge ahead. The IronRun course consisted of 7 miles of off country terrain, 52 different obstacles and a hell of a lot of mud! A lot of us had only really concentrated on trail and road running to get ourselves prepared, but in hindsight, a bit more upper body and specific leg work wouldn't have gone a miss!

And we're off!

The hour or so before the start dragged somewhat, as soon as we had arrived on site we were ready and raring to go! Once we'd registered ourselves, got our numbers and handed in our disclaimers signing away our bodies to the whims of the course, we headed over to the start point to stretch and hydrate. We thought it might be wise to get ourselves to the front of the pack for the actual start of the race, avoiding any possible bottle necks that might build up over the first few obstacles. We were a bit of a walking advertisement for Salomon as well, we all turned up in some form of Salomon trail shoes! The first couple of kilometres were fairly easy going, over grassy and flat terrain. Then the first obstacles hit, a few jumps, cargo nets and then a dip into a cooling river and a climb up the hill. It was at this point we started to feel our muscles being tested, the majority of the course from around 3 miles onwards mostly consisted of inclines and swamp like conditions, which sapped the energy in your legs and then some! The obstacles kept coming; tyre runs, A-frames, spider traps. We seem to be in agreement of our favourite obstacle though, the water slide. The quickest way to get down a hill, lie back and let the slide do the rest of the work! Until you hit the mud pond at the bottom however, then it was up to us to get ourselves off our backsides and continue running...

One thing in particular that hits you at this type of event is the camaraderie between participants, if someone falls over there's always a helping hand to get them back on their feet, I was even helped by two 118 runners (afro hair and all) as I slipped on the cargo nets!

Nearly there

We all predicted at the start, that at some point during the middle of the event our bodies would just acclimatise to the conditions and get into a rhythm. It's the same with long distance running too I've found, once your body get itself into that natural rhythm, you don't have to think about it anymore, and invariably any aches and pains you have tend to push themselves to back of your thoughts as you plow on. There were a couple of drinks stops on the way round too, which were much needed, especially as the sun was out all day and temperatures were hitting around the 20C mark at some points. But to be fair we had the cooling aid of gallons and gallons of mud at our disposal, if it's good enough for elephants it's good enough for us!

Unless your an elite athlete, the majority of people aren't two
concerned about their race time, it's more about enjoying it and just
making it to the finish line! We all helped each other around the course and finished at the same time as well, so it was more of a group effort all in all. The finish line was a tad cruel mind, having to climb up a 3 storey haystack and then down to finish the race, but quite frankly, it was all worth it!

It's pretty awesome to be able to say "I completed the IronRun", but it might not even be a one off, at this very moment we're waiting with baited breath for the announcement of the next one! The only downside is that there wern't any proper showers to clean ourselves off in after the event, there was a hose to get the worst off, but to be fair, it just made that hot shower when we got home even sweeter!

Jack Wolfskin have been one of the major players in the outdoors ever since their foundation in 1981. They're one of the leaders in the constant creation of functional and comfortable clothing and equipment. You'll be hard pressed to walk around any town or city without seeing the Jack Wolfskin logo on numerous occasions, especially on the continent. On my trip to Bruges in the winter last year, every other jacket must have been Jack Wolfskin, it's embraced by many, and there's no wonder why.

And at Outdoorkit HQ, we're no different, so we're rather excited to embrace their new Spring/Summer Collection! We've started to receive our first drops this month, with everything from mountain waterproofs to drybags arriving in with us. So we thought we'd take a look at a few pieces of shiny new gear for the coming season!

First up and brand new for SS14 is the Men's Charged Atmosphere Jacket. The jacket utilizes Jack Wolfskin's own Texapore<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

It features two pockets, one chest and one inner, giving you enough space to store smaller documents and outdoor essentials. The jacket has a lightweight summit hood and articulated elbows for dexterity and ease of movement for active pursuits. There's also reflective print and logo's on the front and back of the jacket for extra safety if you're a bit of a night owl!
Moving on over to Daypack territory, another new addition for Spring/Summer is the Kings Cross Daypack. This pack is part of Jack Wolfskin's 'Vintage' range which combines JW classics with contemporary features. Robust
recycled material, synthetic buckskin bases and bold
natural dyes are all characteristic of these bags, giving them their classic standout aesthetics.

The Kings Cross has all the features you'd need in your everyday and urban environment. It comes with a notebook case inside, so you never have to be without your laptop or other portable devices. There's also a padded mobile phone pouch and internal organisation, making it an ideal bag for work.
Not a new one for Jack Wolfskin, but a new style into our SS14 range is the Women's Mountana Jacket. It's a sporty weatherproof shell which comes into it's own on hikes over gentle terrain. The Mountana uses Texapore Air 2L, a fabric that culminates in waterproof, windproof and breathable weather protection. It comes with a mesh and taffeta lining to aid comfort and breathability. On the pocket front, there's two at hips and one inner, leaving you with plenty of storage space for all your accessories and essentials. The jacket also features articulated elbows giving greater ease of movement and dexterity in the arms.
We've all been busily updating our system and the website ready to receive all the glorious new gear for the Spring/Summer season, infact we've started to receive some of our first drops already! Had I have started to write this a week or so back, I'd have felt a bit silly, what with the wind, rain and general gloominess that had been hoovering over the UK since most of Christmas. But, on this delightful Wednesday morning, albeit a tad frosty, I can look out the office window and see the sun finally poking it's head through the clouds. And of course it's getting considerably lighter in the mornings now, so yes, I'd say around about now is the time to start harking on a bit about the Spring!

We're always on the lookout for exciting new brands to add to our range and this Spring/Summer 2014 is no different. We've already had Fjallraven arrive into stock just this week! We're also looking forward to receiving a new pack brand this SS14 in Dakine. They were founded in Maui, Hawaii and specialize in equipment for alternative sports and urban adventures.

We've also added to our tent range this season, with the addition of Wild Country Tents from Terra Nova, to go along side our ever present Vango range! We havn't received our first SS14 Vango drops quite yet, but you will be the first to know when we do!
We say it every season, but the outdoor industry never stands still, as soon as one season comes we're already looking ahead to the next one, or the majority of the time a full two seasons ahead. It may still be January, and rather nippy out there, but we're readying ourselves to get the system updated once more and welcome in our Spring/Summer 2014 Range!

It's hard to talk about the Spring/Summer season without talking tents. So with that in mind we're going to take a look at a few newbies coming in from Vango for SS14!

Kicking things off from Vango's 'Trekking' range, new for SS14 is the Vango Pulsar 300 Tent. The Pulsar utilises Vango's Tension Band System II (TBS II). The TBS II creates a structure allowing the tent to perform and stay strong in adverse weather conditions. When tensioned, the bands brace the pole and prevent sideways movement. The tent has a Protex 5000mm hexagonal polyester 70D fly and uses Powerlite 7001-T6 alloy poles, which although are lightweight, are durable and strong. It's all in one pitching, with a pitching time of 12 minutes, leaving you more time to explore your surroundings. The Pulsar 300 has a total weight of 3.35kg, a pack size of 53 x 16cm and will RRP at around £185.

Stepping away from the tent pegs for a minute, another new product arriving in stock this SS14, we have the Vango Harmony Sleeping Bag. From their family range, the Harmony has a single layer stitch through construction with a Polair 210T polyester microfibre shell. It's been given a single hole siliconised hollow fibre and polyester fill, giving it a suggested temperature usage between 6ºC and 20ºC, making it an ideal bag for Summer camping and festivals et al.

The Harmony sleeping bag has a comfort temperature of 8ºC, a comfort limit of 3ºC and an extreme limit of -11ºC (Though, usually best to ignore the extreme limit as that's the temperature you'd just about be kept alive at...) It's got a pack size of 40 x 23cm and weighs around 1.60kg. The RRP is £35, and we've got two colours due in, the Atlantic shown above and also a Volcano red. The Harmony will also be available in a Double as too!

Stay tuned with us over the coming weeks where we'll have more SS14 and AW14 sneak previews coming your way!
